Herbert Hoover 1929 - 1933

Herbert Hoover, derided for promising "a chicken in every pot," inaugurated many government assistance programs during the Depression. An engineer by background, he actively worked in famine relief in Europe after WW I, with great emphasis on feeding children. Later he worked on Russian relief, receiving medals from the young Communist state.
