Rural Life on a Jeep

If you dream of off road driving and adventure whilst at the same time seeing some of Turkey's undeveloped areas then this is the way to do it.

A convoy of jeeps sets off from Akyaka and we take the old road to Ula, where we stop and visit the old house. A charming couple from Ankara rented this totally unrestored house, it was in excellent conditioned and they have furnished it as it would have been in the late Ottoman period. It's so beautifully done that you get the feeling that the original Ottoman owners has just popped out and are likely to return any moment. In the garden is a little restaurant where we have time for a drink and if you are tempted by the locally woven fabrics a small gift shop offers a good selection.

And now the adventure begins, we journey to Yerkesik and then to Catak Bagyaka village, high up in the mountains, it is quite amazing that this village, not so far from highly developed tourism areas still continues with a pace of life unseen in Europe. The village mosque ( no longer in use ) is registered as a historically important building as it has splendid Islamic frescoes and Calicgraphy. Lunch is taken in one of the village houses where you eat the traditional way ( not at a table! ) and you can sample home baked bread and gozleme - Turkish pancakes.

We then drive through the mountain river - the best fun!! Do remember to take swimming costumes as you will delight in swimming in the fresh water along with the fresh water crabs and frogs.

Don't forget cameras either because you will see the most incredible views over the Gulf of Gokova.

During the day you will learn a lot about the Turkish culture, the traditions and the religion.
A last swim at Cinar beach will wash you off and wake you up from your adventure back to your holiday resort.

Day: Wednesday - weekly (In case we reach the minimum number of 4 we are able to schedule on an any day.)

Departure: 09.00am Return: Approximately 6.30pm
Price: £ 23 per adult
£ 15 per child

MILAS & CARPET FARM

An ideal day out for those who wish to learn a little more about the country's national craft of carpet making combined with a day of history in one of the region's market towns.

After leaving Akyaka we journey to Milas, just about one hour away from Akyaka, not a resort town Milas embodies the real colour and character of a Turkish market town with some interesting historical buildings. Tuesday is market day in Milas so you will have the chance to see Milas at its busiest. Our first stop is at the Kervanseray, in the days of the Silk Route these lodging houses were open to all travellers as a place to rest not only themselves but also their animals. The Milas Kervanseray is totally un-restored and in terms of activities very little has changed in the last hundred years. A blacksmith, a horse dealer, and a tailor who still works with no electricity in his shop, his iron is heated by coal and his machine is hand powered. Of course these craftsmen don't work at the pace of the 20th century and time is taken in the day to visit the coffee house and smoke a hubble bubble pipe before returning to work.

We also take a look at one of the town's most famous Mosques, the Ulu Cami, built in Ottoman times and its neighbouring hamam (Turkish Bath). If you have visited Bodrum you have probably been to the site of the Mausoleum, well, there's not a lot left of the original in Bodrum but in Milas is a small replica which gives an idea of the grandeur of this amazing tomb, built by Artemesia in honour of her husband (and brother, one and the same!) Mausolus. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (name the rest!), much of the original Mausoleum is now housed in the British Museum. When you see the replica take time to consider that the real thing stood as high as a 20 story building.

After lunch and a little shopping or exploring time our next stop is at the Ildiz Carpet Farm. The name Farm seems unusual, one is more used to hearing of carpet villages, shops or centres, but a farm is what this is Carpet weaving is a main source of income in many areas. The women do everything with their hands, from cleaning and spinning the wool to dying the yarn with home made vegetable dyes. Girls as young as 7 or 8 years old learn the techniques handed down from mother to daughter.

The Ildiz Carpet Farm is a centre for collection of hand woven carpets from all parts of Turkey, and here the techniques used in making the carpets are demonstrated and the processes used to test the quality form a part of the tour. The atmosphere is very 'laid back" and you will be under no pressure to buy.

TURKISH BATH

For many people the promise of a holiday in Turkey conjures up the potential delight of a Turkish Bath, but, if you have travelled here before you will know that a good hamam' is not always easy to find. Well, we've discovered a beauty.

Dating back to 1258 (Islamic calendar) the Mugla Hamam is one of the best examples of a traditional bath, grey marble everywhere and small fountains lining the walls, whilst in the middle of the room is the raised platform where you can delight in the pleasure of a "real" massage. (You'll understand what real means after the event!) For those who really like it hot there is a small sauna room where you can steam to your hearts content.

We leave Akyaka in the late afternoon and travel to Mugla, just 30 minutes, whilst on the bus you will learn a little about the history of the Turkish Bath and what to expect when you get there. On arrival at the hamam you are equipped with a cotton wrap and sandals. The modest may wear swimming costumes but you'll probably enjoy it more if you don't! The traditional programme starts with "kese", the skin is vigorously rubbed with a fingerless glove made of a rough material, the purpose being to remove the dead skin, you will be amazed at the layers of dirt that fall away. Don't worry that your tan so carefully cultivated will be rubbed away with the "kese", you'll find that tanning afterwards will result in a lot less peeling! However, we do advise that you should go carefully in the sun immediately after your treatment.

Everyone will delight in the massage and a jolly good steam! You don't need to bring anything along, wraps, towels, sandals etc. are provided but if you like your own brand of shampoo we suggest that you may wish to take that along, and don't forget the camera. Cold drinks are available.
Day: Saturday - weekly
Depart: 4.00pm Return: Approximately 7.30pm
Price: £14.00

A RIVER TRIP

One of the best features of our village is the river, the fast flowing, incredibly clear and incredibly cold water can be seen from the riverside restaurants but if you really wish to experience the beauty of the river then the best way is to take a trip up river. Mehmet Datca is the village 'elder' and he happily provides our clients with an excellent half day trip aboard his fishing boat, not only will you see the river of Akyaka, the AZMAK, with its abundant birds and wildlife, yoy may even get a glimse of the famous OTTERS, but also the river of Akcapinar and on the return trip the boat will stop at Cinar Beach and give you the chance for a swim.

Do take along a hat and some water as it can be quite hot and there is no shade on the boat. Additionally if you are a keen nature lover be sure to take paper and a pencil to jot down all the species of birds and wildlife that you see.

The boat takes a maximum of 6 adult passengers comfortably.
