For many visitors to Turkey one of the greatest joys is the sea, we are very fortunate to have astoundingly clean waters with no waves and abundant marine life, snorkels, masks and flippers are soon added to the shopping list. If you have enjoyed snorkelling around the coastline and think that you may enjoy scuba diving then whilst you have time on your hands you may wish to join a course and start a new hobby.

There many dive schools in Marmaris all operating similar courses but we would recornrnend that you join the very professional European Diving Centre courses. Steve and Alf opened this school in Fethiye in 1990 and their succes led to them opening a branch in Marmaris. The school is an accredited PADI ( Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and BSAC School. They offer full English instruction and Mepar Tours clients are named on the school's insurance policy which is with a U.K. company (Divemaster Insurance) - this is important as your holiday insurance does not cover you for diving.

If you haven't dived before then you will start with the "One Day Beginners Scuba Diving Course”, the course includes a briefing and lecture on board the dive boat with equipment familiarisation, follow by instruction in a sheltered cove and the first dive. After lunch you will have a chance for another dive and just to prove that you really did scuba dive a certificate is presented at the end of the day. Having got the hang of it you may wish to sign up for a second day when you will do a morning and an afternoon dive. You may decide that this is the sport for you in which case you can proceed with the certification courses. If any of the family wish to accompany you but not dive they may do so and will have full use of the snorkelling equipment on board.

Recreational diving has only been permitted in Turkish waters since 1985 and all dives have to be under the guidance of a Turkish dive leader, so, even if you are an experienced diver you will have to join one of the organised dive tours.
