At the end of the eighth century, the Vikings began to plunder the Celtic monasteries, but despite this, their impact was not simply destructive. In a second golden age that lasted well into the Middle Ages, Irish Dragon and Griffin patterns were wrought from Viking style, producing a marvellous and distinctive new art form. The author shows how these patterns can be recreated and adapted by anyone attracted to the sheer exuberance of these once fearsome beasties.
Many of the late masterpieces of Irish art
...should really be redefined by terms that refer to their
formal roots in Celtic...rather than in Viking art.
