Statement of Purpose

To work for the integration of biological processes and engineering in promotion of controlled environment plant production systems (CEPPS). This can be derived from the aspects of plant science, biotechnology, agriculture economics, food processing, nutrition and environmental science. This concept of a plant based engineering system in which plants are grown as a consumable product and/or a component process has been termed phytomation. Phytomation deals with everything from plant production under simple covers to a bioregenerative life support system for space exploration. Aiding the grower to the researcher.

The integration of biological processes and engineering has long been recognized as being capable of creating effects beneficial to human kind. Plants play a very important role in the natural environment and human life. Plants require proper environments to grow and develop. In return, plants contribute to the regeneration of the environment. The study of plant based engineering systems originated from a need to produce plants of high quality during the time when the natural environment is not conducive to plant growth. The purpose of plant production has been mostly for satisfying market needs. Recently, plants have taken on extra roles within a plant based engineering system. They are part of the environment. The balance of their functions as a final product and as an engineering component within a plant based controlled environment will continue to be a very interesting consideration and challenging research question in the foreseeable future.
