what do you do about your diet and exercise when you are not able to be
active and do 30 min. on a treadmill?

At that point food becomes a problem or at least so I have found. I am
sure I am not alone in this either (smile) 3 big meals.....whew! I am not
happy living like that and as consistency in meals is stressed what do you
do about it?
Especially when you are not able to be physically active.

and what do you do when you cannot be "active" what and how do you get the
exercise that is so important?

Hi Vivian,

You beat me to it as I just came from the MD and was told I couldn't
exercise for a while as I have very painful bursitis in my knee. I think I
aggravated an existing condition trying to use a manual treadmill when I am
used to a motorized one. I hope you get a lot of answers as I also just got
the results of my bloodwork and my A1C was 7.76 which is good I think and I
don't want to spoil it. The only problem is my blood pressure is very
high(168/106). I'm under an enormous amount of stress these days so it is
probably that but does anyone know if anti-inflammatory medication causea a
rise in blood pressure? Thanks for listening.

Vivian,

I am facing this now - I was hoping the doctor would give me some relief
for light exercise after surgery, but when I asked him in the recovery room
he said *NO* exercise for at least a week, until he sees me again and can
see how things are doing. However, a nurse suggested that avoiding heavy
strain was the big issue, and that I could do arm exercises while lying in
bed - as long as I didn't start raising BP. I guess that helps keep some
tone up, but it sure doesn't qualify as aerobic exercise.

I guess the question in your case is what exercise, or more appropriately,
what muscle groups, can you exercise, and is there something specific that
can be tailored around that?

Ellen-Ann,

If you are not completely restricted from leg motion, low resistance-high
RPM exercyling or swimming may be possible without aggravating the knee -
check with your MD. It is even possible to maintain fitness by cycling
with one leg. This requires a strap on the good leg so it can both push
and pull the pedal on its side, and removing the unused pedal or finding a
foot rest for the troubled side. I actually saw an article that indicated
the unused leg somehow enjoys some benefit from this in a slower loss of
conditioning, but I have no idea how that would work. The other option is
to work the muscles of the arms - some of the dual motion exercycles can be
driven with just the back and forth hand motion, but it is not easy to get
the flywheel started (I have tried this). But once it is spinning you can
keep it going.

Marc in my case the amount of exercise I am capable of is very limited due
to the myopathy and lactic acidosis......basically in bad weather I am
limited to walking up and down stairs in milder weather I walk but not for
great distances and not at an aerobic pace....I should say stroll (G)

I am certain there are many here who cannot exercise in the way that is
recommended and would love to generate some discussion of this.

Just to add to this ... My grandfather had polio in his left leg as a
youngster and so has to cycle with one leg. Both foot pedals on his
exercise bike have straps which hold the foot on, kind of like a stirrup.
He bought the bike from a medical supply company because it had the straps
already on it.

He made a foot rest for his left foot out of some plywood. One piece hooks
over the handlebar, and goes down to a neutral position (about mid-wheel).
This is hinged to another piece which fits into the foot pedal strap.
There's a larger strap (made out of an old belt) on this horizontal piece
which he fits his left foot into. The entire contraption is fairly easily
removed from the cycle, since he and my grandmother share it. It's
actually harder for her to adjust the seat up & down than it is to take the
footrest on & off.

for you in your case you might want to look into swimming and/or water
aerobics. Water aerobics are considered gentler on the joints and the
water helps with easing stress on the body. This may be especially good
for you with your bp as an issue.

Viv,

This means you can't really work any major muscles groups I guess.
Although aerobic benefits don't accrue, lower level exercise for shorter
periods does have benefits - if you space out events does that help with
the myopathy or acidosis? Or does the accumulated effects even deny you
this approach?
