Dave (et. al)

I just managed my first century this weekend. As an unmedicated (but
typically obese) type II, I usually do not take my One Touch with me - maybe
I should have, it would make the following tale more informative.

I had a bagel and an apple for breakfast on the way down to the start (a 1.5
hour drive). I started off with two 22oz bottles of 50/50 gatorade mix. The
first break was at 16 miles, at which time I didn't feel hungry (mistake 1).
Besides, the offerings were bananas (I'm on a potassium restricted diet)
cookies, muffins, brownies, and peanut butter and jelly finger sandwiches.
I took a small brownie and refilled the one bottle I had emptied with water
(mistake 2). The next break was 20 miles away - 5 miles before I got there
I had stopped drinking from the water bottle and was drinking just from the
gatorade mix bottle, cause I felt low. I refilled both bottles with a 50/50
mix at the stop, ate a few cookies, looked at the PB&J sandwiches (which the
yellowjackets were VERY interested in!), and decided no. I found an apple
and a granola bar (110 calories, 2 g fat) and had a cup of straight
gatorade.

That perked me up, but the next break was 27 miles away (the longest I have
ever gone without stopping), and by then I had drained both bottles of mix,
and most of my muscles . I grabbed 3 granola bars, sucked down a bottle
of mix, and refilled both bottles again. I tried to lie down for a while,
but the yellow jackets were even denser at this stop (even though the staff
had laid out a PB&J just for them - I had to chase one out of my water
bottle when filling it from the gatorade jug), and eventually I took off,
feeling that the muscles hadn't been replenished yet.

The next break was only 12 miles away, but I finished off another bottle of
mix by then. At this spot they had a surprize - bagels! I had one WITH
creamcheese (bad boy) and another apple, and felt human - sort of. It was 16
miles to the last break, where I had a cookie and a bagel (no temptations
this time - they had no creamcheese) and refilled the water bottles again,
having gone through one an a half on the way there.

I got a flat about 100 yards down the road from the break (why don't these
things happen going IN to the break). OK, so kevlar belted tires aren't
perfect! and replaced the tube with a Specialized airlock I had as a spare -
after borrowing someone's pump - mine had decided to stop working!!!!

After packing up at the finish, I finished off the water bottle of mix I had
been working on, and had another granola bar. I had a bagel on the way home,
wahed down with some mix. When I got home an hour and a half later my BG
was 106. I had a late dinner of a LARGE bowl of pasta, some sugar free
chocolate bars, and a few apples. The next morning I had my regular big bowl
of cereal and an apple, but lunch was a little late - and I was down to a BG
of 68. Yup - exercise effects continue for a long time.

I have no idea what some of the cookies and the like were worth, but figure
I must have gone through at least 530 grams of CHO from the fruit, bagels,
granola bars, and gatorade before I got home.
