Branded Rally Club of Maryland

updated 10/30/98

Branded is a member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Sports Car Clubs (MWCSCC) and runs mostly TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) rallies under the MWCSCC rules. Another big rally supporter in the Washington, DC area is the Washington Rally Club. These events are not races, but precision driving and navigating events. For information about rallying in general, and for a list of upcoming events from across the country and around the world, be sure and check out Clint Goss' Rally Homepage. Clint's "Road Rally Handbook" is a great introduction to rallying as well as a resource for the experienced competitor.

Results of the Oldies But Goodies Rallye, March 29, 1998

I want to express my appreciation to all the contestants who participated in what I hope was a fun learning experience. The traps you saw on the event have been used many times on past rallies. When you see them again on future rallies you will now have a chance to do them right. Again, many thanks to all the workers who made the event possible and the weatherman for following through on a really fine spring day.

Results from the Catoctin Monte VIII, October 18, 1998.

An amazingly sunny and warm autumn day brought contestants out from as far away as New Hampshire to tour through the Catoctin Mountains. It always seems like there is much more dirt than the mileages reflect, it must be due to all the slowing down you do to save your car at those nasty water breaks. This year there were some scoring surprizes as a semi-equipped car beat all the computers to take first overall (with about 1/2 point per control) and a pair of first-time Rookies beat out all the beginners and novices.

Results of the Lord Calvert Memorial Rally, November 8, 1998

26 cars started out from North Beach on a beautiful Fall day to challenge the 1998 version of the Lord Calvert Memorial Rally. Eric Bloom, President of the BRANDED Rally Club of Maryland, stated, "This is the third year our club has put on a Monte Carlo Rally in North Beach, and this is by far the most challenging and competitive course we have ever used here." Starting almost a year ago, members of the BRANDED club designed a 95 mile route over public roads in Calvert and Anne Arundel Counties which they then accurately measured to the 1/100th of a mile. They then calculated an ideal time within the speed limit for driving the route to the 1/100th of a minute. Instructions were prepared for the competitors guiding them around the rally route. The challenge to the driver and navigator teams was to avoid getting lost while passing some 17 control checkpoints exactly on time. Penalties were assessed for arriving early or late at the manned checkpoints so there was no advantage to speeding around the course. Rallymaster Rich Romer noted that, "BRANDED club members spent hundreds of man and woman hours insuring that the competitors had accurate and safe instructions and an enjoyable and competitive rally."

The rally route used paved roads throughout and took advantage of the area's beautiful fall foliage to provide the participants with attractive scenery as they worked their way from North Beach north toward Annapolis and then south to Sunderland before returning to North Beach while crossing both Counties from the Bay Shore to the Patuxent River. The rally ended at Thursday's Bar and Grill where everyone gathered for food and drink while scores were calculated and prizes awarded. Gordon and Rita Wagner, a couple in their 80s, won the overall prize and the "Equipped" category for the second of the three years they have competed in the Calvert Rally. The Wagners use an on board computer they built themselves and the knowledge gained from years of rallying to drive the course with less than nine seconds of error, beating their nearest competitors by about 2 seconds. North Beach residents Kelly and Jim Bradshaw, who won their class last year, came in second to Earl Thompson and Steve Leisge in a very competitive "Beginner" category, losing a chance to keep their crown by a mere 10 seconds.
