The Ruth Shenton Scholarship Award for Journalism

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Sports Car Clubs ((MWCSCC) is an organization comprised of many different area car clubs. Our primary purpose is the promotion of motorsports by establishing a format for the safe and fair operation of competitive events. While our main concern is with autocrosses and rallies the range of activities of our member clubs include racing, car shows, drivers schools, conventions of marque clubs, charity events and many other activities that lend themselves to writing and photo opportunities.

MWCSCC is proud to offer the 1st. annual "Ruth Shenton Scholarship Award" for journalism in 1998. This scholarship was established to honor one of our most beloved and long time supporters Mrs. Ruth Shenton, who with her husband Bob was involved in the founding of the original Corvette Club. Together they started the Stopwatcher Magazine where she served as Business Manager until her death in October of 1996.

The "Ruth Shenton Scholarship" is open to any student either currently attending or planning to attend a college journalism course. The winner will be the student writing the best story covering an MWCSCC member clubs event printed in the Stopwatcher from March to November 1998, as decided by a committee chosen by the MWCSCC and the Stopwatcher. The scholarship amount of $250.00 will be paid to the school for the winning student.

The following format will be followed:

Students wishing to compete must contact the Stopwatcher and one of the listed MWCSCC representatives.

The story must be about an event sponsored or co-sponsored by a member club of the Metropolitan Council of Sports Car Clubs from March through October of 1998. Family members of the MWCSCC judging committee or the Stopwatcher are ineligible.

An application and list of MWCSCC club representatives will be sent to the student, and flyers of up coming events will be mailed periodically.

Students must check for upcoming events on; the council HOTLINE and/or web page, the Stopwatcher, the club reps, and club web pages.

To cover a particular event the student must notify the Stopwatcher, a MWCSCC rep., and the event chairman that they will be there to write a story.

The student must report to their contact person at the event to insure that they are recognized and receive the information they need to complete their story. (results, etc.)

They must then file the story with the Stopwatcher along with their completed application in a timely manner. If more than one story is submitted per event the Stopwatcher will determine which story to publish.

Students may write about as many events as they wish but the above rules apply for each story submitted.

Judging for the scholarship will be done in November by the Judging committee. The winner will be announced in December (with the money available then if necessary). The official presentation will be made at the Annual Council Awards Banquet held in January or February of 1999.
