Bill and Susan's Lundehund Page

Our 4 year old female Lundehund -- Sunny

The Norwegian Lundehund is a small, spitz-type dog with several characteristics that are different from every other breed. They are the only dog to have six toes on each foot, as well as amazing flexibility that allows them to splay their front legs out at right angles from their body and gives them the ability to touch the top of their head to their spine. These unusual abilities were used from before the 15th century by fishermen on the coast of Norway to catch puffins. These penguin-sized birds were hunted for both their meat and their feathers. Since puffins nest in tunnels made in rock cliffs, the lundehund's ability to climb the cliffs and crawl into the burrows made them highly prized among the fishermen. Today, no longer used to hunt, the Lundehund is a true companion, loyal, playful and virtually non-aggressive toward people and other dogs -- even when challenged.
