  Artist-Painter Arlette Steenmans

 Welcome to my watercolour courses

En langue française  Deutsche Sprache  Nederlandse tekst

During the courses we try to instruct you on composition, colours, technique, 3 D and space, but the true goal is to help you free yourself from the restrictions of the rulebook. To be an artist is above all to be yourself.

Courses with an artist

The courses are given by painter Arlette Steenmans. She was born in Belgium in 1958 and studied Art in Antwerp. She has received many awards for her paintings and her work hangs in many private collections all over the world.

A word about tools

Buy the very best that you can afford. It's tough enough learning to paint  without the additional handicap of poor quality materials.

  • Two or three of the best brushes will serve you better and longer than a fistful of cheapies!
  • Good quality paints are : Daler-Rowney, Winsor&Newton, Talens, Rembrandt,...
  • Mostly used is watercolour paper on a block or per sheet (200g, 300g, 640g). Also see the websites Arches, Canson,...
  • Don't forget some pencils, eraser, bowls, lots of rags and a sun hat.
  • A dozen of colours to start with will do (cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, permanent green light, olive green, cadmium oxide green, cadmium red, aliziran crimson, ultramarine blue, monastral blue, cerulean blue, burnt umber, sienna)

Accommodation

The courses take place at La Remise in the little village of Puimichel, situated in the pre-Alps of the Provence in Southern France. There are not many places in the world where the contrasts are greater than in Provence.  Until 1982 "La Remise" was a ruin of an old barn. Living conditions happily improved over the years and a thorough renovation became possible with the help of the Fund for Regional Development of the European Union. "La Remise" is a simple residence but much appreciated for its warm welcome and friendly informal atmosphere. For those who can accept a simple residence,  La Remise offers accomodation. There are rooms with shared washing and toilet facilities, plus two rooms with individual facilities. Students of the painting courses stay in the art center together with the artist in full board... Wine, water, coffee and tea are served with the meals and are included in the price. A hotel is situated at 5 km from Puimichel for those who prefer such facilities. There is also the possibility of renting a gite.

The artist loves animals and has two dogs and two cats at home.
