Rugby Club was founded in 1954 by a group of enthusiasts from the Establishment
at AWE.
They were mainly Welshmen hence our club colour Scarlet. From these early days the Club has grown to its present size where we cater for three senior sides and a strong and growing Mini and Youth section Our catchment area extends from Basingstoke to Reading in the East and Newbury in the West. There is a fairly broad choice of clubs for a rugby player to belong to in the area ranging from the senior clubs in the towns which mark the boundary for us to clubs at Tadley, Thatcham, Overton, Kingsclere which overall shows the game to be in a very healthy state at the grass roots Because of and yet despite the turmoil in the Senior game as it grapples with the pressures of professionalism, Aldermaston have chosen to remain dedicated to the game for amateur players and even more have set ourselves to foster the game for youth. We are building close relationships with the local schools sending players and coaches along to help teach the boys and girls the skills and traditions of this finest of team games Our first XV is currently playing in the Berks, Doreset and Wiltshire league, Division two. We have two high quality pitches provided by the Recreation Society of the AWE and the club is a member section of the Society which has a fine bar and concert hall a gymnasium a skittle alley and other function rooms. There are many other sports and recreation sections which belong to the Recsoc. Squash, Tennis, Badmington a thriving Bowls Club. Two cricket pitches are home to three teams from the AWE plus the Rugby Clubs own cricket team and several local sides hire them as well The Recsoc is very much a family place and the large and friendly bar is always busy and of course being a club organisation the price of a drink is favourable compared with outside prices. Good bar meals can be had lunch times and evenings and the facilities can be hired for functions at competetive prices.
