WHAT IS SIX CIRCLE ARBROATH?

Six Circle Arbroath is part of the Six Circle Group - a Scottish Registered Charity which was founded in 1969.

Six Circle Arbroath provide volunteer opportunities for people whatever their circumstances. We provide a chance for people to contribute to their community, whether they may be unemployed, have a physical or mental disability, be socially isolated or be referred by the courts to carry out a supervised attendance order.

Volunteers are encouraged to take the initiative, and develop their creative, practical and team skills, whilst reaping the rewards of helping others and benefitting the community.

Six Circle can also provide information and guidance on other opportunities and support services that are available. Local college students provide input and help with activities, whilst on placement. Anybody over 16 is welcome to volunteer.

HOW DID SIX CIRCLE START?

Six Circle was started in 1969 by Charles Hills, the then governor of Noranside Prison. He took some "borstal boys" together with a group of young adults with learning disabilities on a residential trip to Aultbea in Wester Ross. Friendships were created there, in an atmosphere of mutual self-help, bringing insights into each others lives.

Part of the old submarine defence system found on the beach there consisted of several interlocking rings. It was noticed that they could be put together in such a way that they all made contact with each other. This is the origin of the Six Circle name and logo.

Six Circle's motto is "In meeting the needs of others, we meet the needs of ourselves".
