.

A Pair of Spitfires, one most likely flown by the Sqn CO,
is shown as a new boy is put through the paces of a mock
duel high over the coast. The Pilots would make the most of the
power and manoeuverability of this legendary aeroplane.

"Croydon Departure - The Golden Years"
by Gerald Coulson

During the early 1930's Imperial Airways of London
introduced its European and Eastern routes the HP42; an
enormous four engined Handley Page bi-plane carrying 38
passengers at a sedate 1000 mph. For the first time air
travellers could enjoy Pullman comfort, the wicker-work
chairs finally being dispensed with.

Geralds painting portrays 'Horatius' Paris bound from
Croydon. What a sight to behold; truly a galleon
of the clouds.

Quartet by Gerald Coulson

"Quartet"
by Gerald Coulson

The inspiration for this subject was principally the setting
A low sun turning the tops of towering cumulus to a soft ochre
against a backdrop of azure.
Through breaks in these massive clouds can be seen a
landscape beginning to fade; greens and yellows changing
to liquid blues and mauves. All that is now required to
complete the picture are the lines of a beautiful aeroplane.

Singing Wires by Gerald Coulson
"Singing Wires"
by Gerald Coulson
The de Havilland Tiger Moth, one of the world's greatest
aeroplanes. Not one of the most comfortable, nor noted for
its crisp handling qualities. It is, nevertheless, a delight in
which to be aloft over a sun-dappled landscape.

End of an Era by Gerald Coulson
"End of an Era"

Entering service in 1951, the Shackleton has been seen
worldwide performing anti-submarine and search and rescue
duties prior to the installation of the radar necessary for the
airborne early warning role in 1972 with No 8 Squadron
at RAF Lossiemouth, Morayshire.

Happy Days by Gerald Coulson

"Happy Days"
by Gerald Coulson

An apt alternative title could be
'A portrait of the airtist in his element'.
Few pilots can resist the temptation for low flying should the
opportunity present itself. Out of sight of the spoil-sport eyes
of authority the rules will be broken, and this painter would
endulge in this chancy, but undeniable thrill.

Scramble by Gerald Coulson

"Scramble"
by Gerald Coulson

A telephone rings at a typical flight dispersal: a call from
Operations sends pilots and ground crew running for aircraft
ready fuelled and armed. A mechanic starts the engine of the
Spitfire in the foreground. It explodes into life, blasting out
blue exhaust gasses, the slipstream flattening the grass and
kicking up dust.
A young sergeant pilot, with feelings a mixture of fear and
excitement, runs for his machine. The chorus of Rolls Royce
Merlins
from the formations of airborne Hurricanes
provide the background music.

"Thunder in the Hills"

Military fast jets spend most of their operational time at very
low level. Sparsely populated locations, such as the valleys of
North Wales, Scotland and the lakes of Cumbria provide ideal
training areas to perfect the skills required to 'hide' behind
high ground, and remain undetected by enemy radar.
Flying at 250 feet and over 500 mph, two Jaguar GR1's from
No 2 Squadron on a low level reconnaissance sortie are the
subject of Gerald's 'heavy metal' painting.

This picture depicts an incident at sunrise on the morning of
26 July 1940. A Wellington 1c of 99 Squadron, based at
Newmarket Heath, returns from a raid over Durtmund.
An engine fails over the North Sea and the aircraft,
captained by Squadron Leader Sarll, struggled almost to its
home base and crashed just south of Cambridge.
The crew survived.

To mark the 60th Anniversary of the first Test-Flight
of the Spitfire.

ALEX HENSHAW enjoyed a world wide reputation as a successful air
racing and record breaking pilot in the 1930s, and apart from winning
the 1938 King's Cup race, his most famous flight was from England to
Capetown and back in the same Mew Gull in 1939, setting a record
which is still unbroken.
During WW II he was chief production test pilot at Vickers' Castle
Bromwich factory in Birmingham, which produced over 12000 Spitfires
including Lancasters.
Alex personally flight tested over 10% of all Spitfires ever made.
