1. Will FaxIt work with my xyz fax modem?

Check the Modem Compatibility List for a list of modems and whether they work or not. There is also some general information about fax modems on the Modems page. When you do find out whether or not your modem can play, please let me know so I can add it to the compatibility list.

2. How can I register FaxIt?

3. Can I fax using a GSM card modem?

Quite probably. There is a page devoted to GSM Modems

4. I've installed FaxIt, but I don't see the 'FaxIt' printer

For the printer to be available you must place the P_FAXIT.WDR file in the \WDR directory on the Internal drive (M:). Check you did install this file and you didn't put it in the \WRD directory by mistake.

5. I've installed FaxIt, printed to the 'FaxIt' printer but I am not prompted for a fax number

Make sure you printed to the file \FAXIT\FAX.LIS. Its a common mistake to print to \FAXIT\FAXIT.LIS or to print the file into the wrong directory.

6. Can FaxIt receive faxes?

No it can't. The main reasons I have not delved too deeply into receiving faxes are

  • Performance - I have never felt confident that the Psion could keep up with the incoming data stream
  • Storage space - a single page of compressed fax can occupy 10k - 200k of space depending on content. Prior to the 2Mb 3c this amount of space just was not available to store pages in any useful quantity.
  • The processing power to decode compressed fax is not trivial. Again, I never thought the humble 3a was up to the job.

However, it appears I have been proved wrong. A company in Germany, Psiologic, claim to have a receive-only fax program for the Series 3a/3c. Further details at http://www.psiologic.com

7. Does FaxIt support Class 1 fax modems as well as Class 2/2.0?

No it does not. For a description of the differences between the two types of modems, see Classes

8. I've installed FaxIt, but it only seems to fax one page

What you have is an unregistered copy. The unregistered version enables you to evaluate the program. If you then register the software, the one page limit is removed. There are no other features disabled in the unregistered version. You can register FaxIt on-line using the RegNet service.

9. Does FaxIt support the Psion Travel Modem?

This gets a question of it's own as it crops up very frequently. This modem needs DSR handshaking. With FaxIt 1.4 and earlier this was not possible and so the TM did not work. FaxIt 2.1 forced DSR on. This seems to have caused other modems not to work. FaxIt 2.2 fixes the problem by making DSR a user setting. It can be set from the Modem Settings screen (Psion-M). The default is NO so FaxIt should behave as it always did. Set to YES to use FaxIt with the Psion Travel Modem.

10. I can't get FaxIt to talk to my modem. What can I try next?

Look at the page on Testing Modems to check if your modem might be compatible. Also, make sure you are using the correct cable. If you have FaxIt 2.2 you can try and change the DSR handshaking setting in the Modem Settings screen (Psion-M). It is normally set to NO. If you still can't get anywhere, use the Query Modem and Trace functions described on the Support page, then E-mail me the trace file.
