These are my personal Top Ten, as of October 1999. Most of the bands are described in further details on my "hot music page".

Hint: this chart list songs from all times and ages, so perhaps you might think that the selection is a bit strange.

No 10: Sympathy for the Devil

words and music: Jagger/Richards

performed by: Guns'n'Roses

This song is the title song of "Interview with the Vampire", one of my favorite vampire movies. It also is a very cute song, very dark.

No. 9: Heresy

words and music: Trent Reznor

performed by: Nine Inch Nails

This song is about Trent Reznor's bad experiences with Xtianity.

No. 8: Another Brick in the Wall

words and music: Roger Waters

performed by: Pink Floyd

IMHO, "The Wall" is one of the greatest concept albums ever made. And "Another Brick in the Wall" simply is the best song of it.

No. 7: Jesus Christ Superstar

words: Tim Rice

music: Andrew Lloyd Webber

performed by: Laibach

Originally, this song was part ot the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar". It expresses some serious doubts concerning Mr. J. Christ.

No. 6: Gothic Erotic

words: Mozart

music: Umbra et Imago

performed by: Umbra et Imago

Hint: With Mozart, I do not mean the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but the singer of Umbra et Imago, whose nickname (by chance) is Mozart.

This song is, as the title says, very gothic - and very erotic. It is definitely not suitable for fundamentalists and weenies, but quite perfect for me. :-)=

No. 5: Love you to Death

words and music: Peter Steele

performed by: Type O'Negative

This song is the a very poetic combination of my most favorite themes: Love and Death..

No. 4: My Way

words: Paul Anka

music: J. Revaux and C. Francois

performed by: Frank Sinatra

I am especially fond of the message of this song: "Go YOUR way!".

No. 3: This Corrosion

words and music: Andrew Eldritch

performed by: The Sisters of Mercy

This song is the best song that Andrew Eldritch ever wrote. With the excellent choir parts, the spinett and the choris, it is almost perfect. Too bad that I don't know the meaning of the song. Some people think that
the text is a message directed to Wayne Hussey, who left the Sisters of Mercy in 1986 after several
arguments with Andrew Eldritch.

There is an outstanding cover version of this song performed by In Extremo.

No. 2: Reincarnation

words and music: Ernst Horn

performed by: Deine Lakaien

This is the greatest song that Deine Lakaien ever produced. The text is full of irony and sarcasm, that's why I like it. Reincarnation is also a possible name for my own band.

and the winner is....

Palästinalied

words and music: Walther von der Vogelweide

performed by: Estampie

This song is far the oldest song which was included in this chart. And nevertheless, it made its way to the top. Why?

Because it is an almost perfect combination: First of all, it is a medieval song, and it shows a lot about the feelings that the people of the Middle ages had.

In addition, it has been almost perfectly performed by Estampie. Especially Michael Popp played it almost perfectly on several medieval instruments.

Last not least: add the beautiful and fascinating voice of Sigrid Hausen, and of course the excellent voice of Tobias Schlierf (sp?).

Note: There are other excellent versions of this song available by Qntal and In Extremo.

All these songs also have been approved by my pocket vultures.
