Sion, Switzerland. 12th - 21st July for 10 days. Sion is an easy train ride from Geneva Airport directly to Sion. Accommodation is arranged in hotels or economical hostels.
Sion is a very beautiful place, friendly, warm, and with a nice climate. It is almost completely surrounded by mountains. The course is part of the Festival Tibor Varga, and includes concerts and recitals. In one of the two castles overlooking the town, there is the oldest working church organ in the world, built in 1380, and ta concert takes place there on this historic instrument each Saturday.
The flute course begins with a basic warm up with daily exercises, and help with technical problems to start the day. Then we look at some of the etudes from Andersen, Moyse, or the Trevor Wye Practice Books. Each person receives help and advice for their tone, technique, articulation or intonation problems. The afternoons are free, and the early evening is spent on the interpretation of the well known flute literature, and on the orchestral repertoire. The repertoire for the classes is chosen on the first day, and is chosen from the pieces which the students have brought with them. There is no formal list, though students are asked to bring some etudes, and the popular flute repertoire, including orchestral studies.
The exact form of the course, and the times of the classes is open to discussion at the first meeting ensuring that enough time is spent on each persons specific musical or technical needs.
We usually meet in the evening to have dinner in one of the many restaurants in Sion and to relax. On the last night, we usually take a picnic together on the top of the mountain in the castle grounds, and stay there until it is dark.
