1 small speech from Brian Eno…
1 Giant Leap for DVD

What is 1 Giant Leap? A group of two people, Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman. A project that took them around the world to investigate the things that keep us together or drive us apart. An album. And now a DVD film.

Eclectic mix
Project contributors include Dennis Hopper, Robbie Williams, Kurt Vonnegut, Michael Stipe, Tim Booth, Anita Roddick, Baaba Maal, Fred Reed, Stewart Brand, Mahotella Queens…

During their six-month whistle-stop tour Jamie and Duncan met up with musicians and creative thinkers from 20 countries and recorded their experiences with a digital camera and laptop. Part travelogue, part music video, the 1 Giant Leap film puts these experiences into twelve themed chapters. Brian Eno pops up in the Time section to explain the aims of the Clock of the Long Now: extending our concept of "us" not just as people who share the same planet with each other now, but also with the generations yet to come -- "extending empathy forward into the future…"

En garde
According to the printed biography of Brian in the 1 Giant Leap press-pack, he is "avant-God"; the CD-ROM press-pack on the other hand describes him as "avant-innovator". At EnoWeb we avant a clue what that's supposed to mean.

Rather than grabbing lots of super ethnic samples and stitching everything up seamlessly and soullessly in the studio, Duncan and Jamie's technology freed them up to write and record the initial stages of their songs, put them on the laptop, and then work on the music anywhere their journey took them, whether in Michael Stipe's shed in America or in deserts and jungles miles away from an electricity supply. For the first time ever, their collaborators could hear what previous people had contributed. This meant genuine collaboration and real involvement from everyone on the record. The singers in America could actually hear the musicians in India and the drummers in Africa, and truly play along with them.

Points of departure

CD album and singles: out now

Film: shown in selected venues; DVD out on the Palm Pictures label probably May 20th though it's been postponed a few times

"Brian Eno is one of the greatest inspirations for the whole 1 Giant Leap project. His album (with David Byrne) My Life in the Bush of Ghosts was recorded in 1981 and kicked off the whole 'Sampler' generation… He has an encyclopaedia of every musical instrument in the world so along the way we'd call him from a mountain top in Uganda and he'd look up the instruments we were recording and tell us about them long distance."
Jamie Catto

Who won the 1 Giant Leap DVD?

hatThere was an impressive turnout for EnoWeb's first ever prize draw. The picture shows the hat containing details of the 158 entrants, under the watchful eye of Mustard the Adjudicator. Alas there could only be 3 lucky winners! Those whose names were first out of the hat in a random draw on 22nd April 2002 were:

  1. Elod Toth, USA
  2. Frank Remus, Canada
  3. Maurizio Proietti, Italy

Congratulations to them. They'll be receiving their DVDs shortly after EnoWeb receives them from Girlie Action Media. Commiserations to everyone else, and thank you for taking part! The DVD should be commercially available from 20th May.

The text below is retained just in case anybody wants to waste a few minutes reading out-of-date stuff. EnoWeb caters for odd tastes.

WIN the 1 Giant Leap DVD!

EnoWeb has three copies of the 1 Giant Leap DVD to give away totally free of charge, courtesy of those kind people at Girlie Action Media, Inc. We can't be bothered to think up a competition with tricky questions in it like "What was Brian's pet hedgehog called?" or "How many cats are there in the Opal office?" so we're just going to make this a straightforward prize draw.

How it works: The draw is over -- you're too late, I'm afraid.

Simply send EnoWeb an e-mail using the special link below; please provide your name, town and country. These details will only be used for the draw and afterwards will be deleted from my hard disk because they'll be taking up too much space, so no data protection worries there. After the closing date, three names will be chosen at random using the technologically advanced method of printing them out and pulling them out of a hat. The owners of those names will each receive one copy of the 1 Giant Leap DVD.

Things you should know:

  1. Only one entry per person. This keeps it fair. Please do not make multiple applications.
  2. Draw is only open to people aged 18 or above. This is because the DVD certificate is 18 and so it cannot be supplied to people below that age.
  3. Closing date is 20th April 2002 and we won't accept any entries after that.
  4. The draw will take place on 22nd April 2002; the winners will be notified by e-mail within 48 hours.
  5. The DVD is Region 1 (USA and Canada). This means it can only be played on a US or Canadian DVD player/drive, or a multi-region DVD player/drive that can play Region 1 DVDs (many models can be harmlessly reprogrammed at your own risk). DVDs won't play on CD players/drives.
  6. How free is free? These DVDs were kindly provided free by Girlie Action Media which is promoting the 1 Giant Leap project. EnoWeb will pay airmail postage out of its own pocket but if the winners were to want insurance as well they would need to reimburse us; we're not made of money.
  7. No purchase necessary.
  8. EnoWeb respects your privacy. Your e-mail address will not be passed on to anyone. EnoWeb does not like receiving unsolicited Spam junk e-mail and doesn't know anybody who does.
  9. Offer not open to people who just want to sell their prize at an on-line auction site. If you don't actually want this DVD, please don't enter the draw.
  10. Winners consent to have their names and countries posted here after the draw so that everyone can see that there were indeed three genuine winners in this great-value EnoWeb promotion!

[E-mail link removed as draw is no longer open]
