Speyside

Banff

This distillery once supplied the House of Commons. This didnīt prevent it from being closed and dismantled in 1983.

Cadenhead bottling: dist. Aug 1976, bottled Jun 1994, oak cask, 60,5%vol

Banff

The colour is golden, the nose smoky-sweet. The palate, like the nose, smoky-sweet, ginger and (cinnamon?). The finish is gingery, deep . A pleasant malt after dinner. The nose reveals more complexity after adding a few drops of water.

Dallas Dhu

dist. 17 May 1974, bottled Apr 1993, 60.8%vol, cask No. 1498

Dallas DhuDallas Dhu

This Malt is bottled by the Scotch Single Malt Circle and only available to members. If you like to contact them, please e-mail me.

The color is light-amber. The nose is lightly smoky, flowery and some malt. The palate comes close to malt-chocolate and the finish is long, smooth and slightly peaty. There are again hints of chocolate. The whisky is not chill-filtered.

I like this one. A very aromatic digestiv. No "everyday" taste. And rare: The distillery closed in 1983 and is now a museum.

Glen Avon

Glen Avon is a branded label. That means a distillery of this name doesnīt exist. It is marketed by Avonside Whisky Ltd., a subsidiary of Gordon & Macphail. All they tell you about this whisky is that this one is from a Speyside distillery that is still operational. Iīm sorry to tell you that I simply canīt afford opening this bottle to try to find out. This bottle is way more expensive than my self-set limit of about 110 US$ (it costs around 180 US$ here in Germany) My dealer said this is a Macallan. But these are rumors and very vague. He didnīt taste it either.

dist. 1953, 40% vol.

Glen Avon

Didnīt open it yet. Maybe you can tell us more about it... Anyway, the colour is medium-amber.

Glencraig

You wonīt find a distillery of this name. This Malt has been produced until 1980 at The Glenburgie distillery between Forres and Elgin.

Gordon&Macphail: dist. 1970, bottled 1991, 40%vol

Glencraig

The colour of this malt is amber. The nose is amoky with plums(?). The palate comes up sweet like (apple?). The finish is very long, woody.

This malt was never intended to be bottled as a Single Malt and is only available by indepentent bottlers.

Knockdhu

The name of this whisky has been changed to to "An Cnoc". This ist probably to avoid beeing mixed up with "Knockando".

12yo, 40%vol.

Knockdhu

The colour is golden. It has a fruity aroma. The palate is very light, fruity with some smoke. The finish has some sherry and little oak.

The Macallan

The distillery itself is one of the most famous. Some devotees see kinda "Scotch flagship" in this distillery. Their Malts are known for their huge, sherried style. It is today the only distillery that insists on ageing in dry, unbroken Olorosso-casks from Spain, where they got their own bodegas. The Malts are digestivs in the best sense of the word. The right thing after dinner and to relax.

Macallan 18yo

The color is full amber. The nose is only little smoky, some sherry and -I think- some vanilla and plum-aroma. I find a certain fruityness. The palate is very complex, little oaky, Sherry and spices. The finish is huge and warm.

Tantallan

This is a bottling by the Scotch Single Malt Circle and only available to members. Contact me if you are interested in these malts.

A distillery with the name "Tantallan" does not exist. This is a so-called "branded" whisky and wonīt reveal its origin on the label. Anyway, your nose can tell. Itīs the excellent herbal aroma of good old Cragganmore.

14yo, 43%vol

Tantallan

- The SMC offers this one, from the same cask, at cask-strength too -

The colour is full-golden. The nose of this whisky is unique. It is a most complex composition of herbs, grass, some peat. Very pleasant. The palate is complex too ranging from herbal to flowery. The finish is very long and includes hints of licorice.

Compared to the widely available Cragganmore 12 yo this bottling is more powerful and complex. The finish is longer.

This is what I would offer my best friends. The price of about US$34,50 is a real bargain. This stuff is worth twice as much.
