Edward Chance was born in St Albans in 1947 and was educated at St Albans Boys’ Grammar School and Nottingham University, also studying the French Horn with Andrew Fiske at the Watford School of Music. At the age of 15, he won the National Junior Harmonica Championship at the Scala Theatre in London. Whilst at Nottingham, he became president of the University Music Society and conducted the chamber orchestra. Graduating in Music from Nottingham, he went to study horn with Ifor James at the Royal Academy of Music, winning the Ella Mary Jacob prize and the Musicians’ Union Award. After a year as co-principal horn with the BBC Training Orchestra, he began freelancing in London, working, in Britain, Europe, The Americas and Japan, with many of the capital’s leading chamber and symphony orchestras, particularly the Royal Philharmonic and The Philharmonia. He became principal horn with The Orchestra of St John’s Smith Square, appearing as soloist with them, and as guest principal with other orchestras.Studio work has included music for television and films including scores by Jerry Goldsmith and Henry Mancini. He has appeared on C.D.s and videos of live concerts by various artists, including Harry Connick Jr., Eric Clapton and The Moody Blues. His work includes opera, ballet and chamber music as well as orchestral concerts. He has been principal horn with the English Sinfonia since 1989. Hobbies include writing and arranging music, doing things with, and to, computers, Classical Latin and drinking at the Savage Club. His wife, Ann, is a Californian and they have two teenage children, James and Jennifer.
