The Romans spent over 225 years in Scotland (longer than the history of the United States) leaving behind a rich legacy in physical archaeology and cultural influence. Scotland has the oldest and most northerly linear defence system (Gask Ridge) in the Roman Empire, and also the largest military fort (Ardoch). Recent discoveries at Cramond and Inveresk further attest to the scale of Roman involvement in Scotland. Our own distinct Scots legal system has a profound element of Roman law in its structure.
