My Ed Fowler Knife Pictures

These are links to fairly large JPEG pictures, but I think once you see them, you'll think they were worth the wait!

They are "life size" photos I took of a knife that my older brother gave me for a 1998 Xmas present. The knife was handmade by Ed Fowler and is called a "Pronghorn". Ed hammer forges the blade from a high-quality steel ball bearing, and creates the handle from local sheep horn.

As well as being beautiful, the blade is incredibly strong, tough, and holds its edge for a very long while. The horn handle is very ergonomic and quite tough as well. The blade is sharpened with a "Moran" (or "convex") style edge, which helps give it a sharp, long lasting edge that resists chipping. Okay, okay, now look at the pictures!!

The "scabbard" style sheath is excellent. It holds the knife in securely without loops or snaps that might hinder quick removal. Also easy to put the knife away, and heavy enough to protect you from the knife in a fall. Durable, and some would say attractive, in a rugged sort of way!
You can see the differences in the steel caused by Mr. Fowler's differential heat treating and multiple quenches. And Ed's "plant" design carved into the heavy brass guard. And the sheep horn handle. It's great tough stuff, but I bet another reason is that Ed can pick it up off the ground! :-)

The Knife, in my Hand!
The light hit the blade so well when I took this photo. I like how it outlines the whole blade. Nice studs on the back of the sheath, and the stitching looks like it might last too! The "quartz" behind the guard is polished, matched pieces of the same sheep horn. The black stuff is secret!
Doesn't look like Ed's scarred broken-nailed hands, but you should see me wiring up phone jacks, or typing HTML! :-) Notice a *rare* thing? See near the guard where Ed engraves his "initials"... He forgot to put the "bottom" on the backwards "E"! Wow! So, is mine worth a lot of money?? :-) Hey I just use it...
