Basic - Test

t.o.p.

To be rewarded with the title of a FFF-Europe Certified Flycasting Instructor the candidate must pass the following examinations:

Allowed tackle:
  1. Singlehand rod 7 to 9 feet
  2. Line class max. AFTMA 6, length min. 25 m
  3. Leader, 7 to 9 feet
  4. yellow or orange Palmer, size 14, none spear
Casting abilities (all tests must be passed 100%, 3 tries)
all limits have to be mastered, three attempts are allowed)
Women: 20% minus on casting distances exceeding 18 m!
  1. 20 m cast without line hand
  2. 27 m cast with double haul
  3. Rollcast 15 m
  4. Rollcast backhand 12 m
  5. Switch-Cast 18 m
  6. Switch-Cast backhand 15 m
  7. pick up 15 m clearly and lay down a straight line
  8. false cast 20 m of line with double hauling (incl. leader)
  9. 5-6 false casts with following accuracy cast at 6 m (narrow loop and proper Timing)
  10. 4 false casts with following accuracy cast at 10 m (narrow loop and proper Timing)
  11. 4 false casts with following accuracy cast at 14 m (narrow loop and proper Timing)

Casting class: The candidate must demonstrate the follwing casts with a clear explanation what happens:
  1. demonstrate a tailing loop - explain causes
  2. demonstrate a bow cast (normal / backhand)
  3. demonstrate a parachute cast - explain when to use this cast
  4. demonstrate a reach cast - explain the why and when
  5. demonstrate a collapsed cast - explain what happens
  6. demonstrate a wide open loop - explanation
  7. demonstrate a narrow parallel loop - explanation
Teaching skills: The candidate must show his teaching skills and demonstrate the relaxed form that would be expected from an instructor.
  1. normal cast
  2. Rollcast
  3. Presentation of the fly
  4. Reach cast
  5. during false casting shorten and lengthen the line (15 m - 8 m - 15 m)
  6. demonstrate how to pick up 15 m line from water without disturbing the water.
  7. demonstrate a good cast with a shooting head and explain what must be considered.

Furthermore there is an oral test with questions according to all aspects of Fly Fishing

Master - Test

  1. 30 m cast with hauling
  2. 22 m cast without line hand
  3. 25 m cast backhanded
  4. Deliver a backcast 25 m
  5. 18 m roll cast
  6. 15 m roll cast backhanded
  7. switch cast 22 m
  8. switch cast backhanded 18 m
  9. Carry 24 m of line (leader included, measured from the rodtip to the fly) in air witha proper loop, with double hauling
  10. Pick up 18 m of line (leader included) off water, smoothly with a minimum of water disturbance and drop back straight on water.
  11. Cast all planes and angles with 18 m of line (leader included) horizontally and vertically
  12. Presentation casts (12 m). Accurately throw straight, angled (45°) and curved line on command, long (15 m) and short (10 m) line.
  13. False cast and place the fly on target at 6 m, 12 m und 18 m with great accuracy.
  14. Pick line up (14 m, leader included), no false cast. Change direction of cast 45 degrees and cast forward 18 m.
  15. False cast at least 18 m (leader included). Still false casting strip line in and place fly 6 m away.
  16. Hold fly in hand (12 m of line stripped out), drop fly and make one false cast and shoot line forward 18 m.
  17. Starting with 10 m of fly line plus leader, using double haul, cast 25 m (straight) by making no more than 2 back and 2 forward casts.
  18. Demonstrate well controlled curve casts at 9 m, 12 m und 15 m.
  19. 12 m cast with bow next to leader.
  20. 12 m cast with bow in the middle of line
  21. 12 m cast with bow in end of line nearest the rod tip
  22. cast 15 m of line (leader included) with your bad hand (tight loop, double haul)
  23. Demonstrate a variety of casting techniques to provide a drag-free drift of your dry fly over a long distance (in different currents)

In all phases of this test it must be demonstrated to the examiners that the highest level of proficiency in flycasting, line handling and teaching skills are evident.

Furthermore there is an oral test with questions according to all aspects of Fly Fishing
