Tu B'Shvat:
The Song of Spring
by Steve Hausman
The fifteenth day of Shvat is here
Let's greet it now with great good cheer
It is the New Year of the Trees
Hear them rustle in the breeze
Yes, it is the New Year of the Trees
It's origin based on tithing fees
More than that I won't say
Check out the Gemora one day
On this day we have a seder
(Did you learn that in your cheder?)
But in honor of the trees
We eat just fruit, if you please
Have a plum, a fig, or date
All that fruit is really great
In Israel fifteen pieces do they eat
What a great prodigious feat
At the seder we drink some wine
For it is fruit of the vine
Four full glasses do we drink
Why is that, do you think?
The first is white, the fourth is red
Don't drink too fast, you'll cloud your head
Mostly white is the second glass
With a little red to give it class
The third big glass is mostly red
In it some white is slightly shed
Winter's symbolized by white wine
A season that is cool and fine
Red is for the summer flowers
Brought about by Spring showers
So eat your plum like Little Jack Horner
Purim's just around the corner
Happy, Happy Tu B'Shvbat!!
