The Jutland Roll of Honour

Compiled from official Admiralty sources

Two main lists are provided, taking 6,378 names of ratings and 363 of officers from "PRONames 2" and expanding the information given. The fate (eg killed, died of wounds, prisoner of war) of each man is recorded and there are facts and figures for each ship in the British Fleet taking part in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May/1 June 1916. There are seven subsidiary lists on fiche (incorporated in the database on disk) which give notes and point out the discrepancies found between the different sources. Microfiche or 3½" disk £4.99

Musters of the Militia, 1781-82

PRO: WO 13 by Liz Hore & Stuart Tamblin

The Militia Act of 1757 provided for men to serve in the militia at home in order to counter any threat arising when the majority of the regular army was stationed abroad. Lists of eligible men in each parish were known as militia ballot lists and from these, the men actually chosen appeared in the militia lists which are often to be found in county record offices. At the Public Record Office, however, are to be found the muster and pay lists in class WO 13. These record the men actually serving and this index provides details for each man at the musters in 1781 and 1782. Each volume has an average of 900 records.

The following are available at £4.50 each:

Prisoners Pardoned

A series of indexes to Class HO 13 (from 1782)

These indexes will help to get you back before the early nineteenth century in a series almost as important as the Criminal Registers themselves. Copies were kept of the Home Secretary's correspondence relating to prisoners and their supporters in the Criminal Entry Books. Each original volume, covering approximately a year, contains a contemporary listing, alphabetised by surname of those involved, in sections relating to pardons (free and conditional), references, remissions, respites and warrants particular. The indexes are being released in volumes corresponding to the originals. Details given are name, alias, court, notes, type of record and PRO reference. The whole of England & Wales is covered in each volume.

RG 4 Non-Conformist Registers

Everton Necropolis (Low Hill Cemetery) Liverpool

Volume EV1 - Burials, 1825-1827

In 1837 and again in 1857, registers not relating to Church of England parishes had to be surrendered to the Non-Parochial Registers Commission and 4,680 volumes dating back to 1567 are now in the custody of the Public Record Office (PRO) in Class RG 4. Various PRO Readers' Guides and handbooks detail these non-conformist records and mention a small number of burial grounds but it seems that they are mostly in London, are well-known and have been indexed. Less well-known, it seems, are the records of Everton Necropolis in piece RG 4/3121. This index comprises copies of the entries starting at the beginning of the register in February 1825 and is supplied sorted alphabetically by surname and forename. Fields used relate to the original column headings.

Around 2,200 names are included and the indexes record many details from the originals, including parents of deceased children, ministers and even causes of death. Microfiche or CD-ROM, £5.99

1851 Seamen's Crewlists

PRO: BT 98

These lists and agreements are intended to find many of those involved in merchant shipping who cannot be located on the 1851 census because they simply were not at home to be enumerated. Some were at ports in the British Isles many miles from home and some were not even in the country. Details given include age, place of birth, rank and ticket number, previous and current ships with ports of registration, dates and places of joining and leaving, reason for leaving. Volumes relate to where the vessels were registered and about 30% of men in each volume can be expected to have been born out of county.
