Criminal Registers (PRO Class HO 27)

Stuart Tamblin - Indexes available on Floppy disk, Microfiche and CD-ROM - see below

Having found Hannah Mayes in HO 27/29 (see "Research at the PRO" and "Criminal Research"), I looked for a few other people who had gone missing and was able to record a number in various counties with relevant names. These data were generally left untouched until, in May 1994, I started a project to record and index the details for certain counties appearing in the first twelve yearbooks.

I chose Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Bedfordshire and Cornwall. I then added Oxfordshire to complement growing research in that county and Rutland because I noticed its entries were very few, being the smallest English county anyway. The six counties were completed by March 1995 and a database had been created to hold all the data from the registers and it now contained nearly 3,000 records.

I wanted to publish the registers and thought that the six counties would stand better in company with those adjacent. Despite having interests in most west-country counties, I had left the others initially as I thought they were too large to transcribe. However, I carried straight on in Spring 1995 and added more English counties and the whole of Wales (again, it seemed quite small!), until I had transcribed thirty counties from the first twelve books. In January 1996, the database stood at 8,440 records and had exceeded 25,000 by March 1997 and 38,000 by the time of the publication of the twentieth volume (including some later dates) in November 1997.

As at September 1998, forty-two of the fifty-three counties, 1805-1816, had been published in sixteen volumes and the whole database contained nearly 60,000 records. With only three counties to go, the database stood close to 70,000 records.

All counties in England & Wales now complete, 1805-1816.

The database now contains in excess of 77,000 entries.
