May 1st The Houston Intermediate Japanese Conversation Club meets to practice conversation at Nit Noi, 2020 Louisiana Street.
3 Student-Teacher Japanese Conversation Group meets at 6:30 pm at Sushi Jin on Memorial Blvd. for a Karaoke party. An RSVP is absolutely required. Like other MeetUp events, this is organized using the MeetUp WWW site.
3 APAHA Festival takes place at 3 pm to 11 pm at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, although in recent years this has included no Japan-related events.
3 The 6th Annual Dragon Boat Festival takes place at Allen's Landing downtown, 8:30 am  - 4:30 pm.. Although typically zero Japan-related events are scheduled, this year at least the Consulate-General will have a booth.
4 Final day of exhibit of photographs of Miwa Yanagi at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, exploring role of women in society. It is amazing what can be done using Photoshop (R). Some of the photography is very reminiscent of parts of the Tokyo central train station and Landmark Tower in Yokohama.
7 LaVerl Daily will demonstrate Ikebana at the West University Branch of the Harris County Public Library, 6104 Auden. Registration in advance is required by calling 713-662-5895. Call Keddy Outlaw at 713-668-8273 for further information.
7 Monthly meeting of the Houston Bonsai Society takes place.
7 Cooking class SUSHI 201 will be taught at Central Market (Westheimer at Weslayan), 6:30 - 9:00 pm, by Chef Chris Nemoto. Call 713-386-1700 for more information.
11 The Japan Business Association of Houston / Japanese Association of Greater Houston hold a joint picnic for members at Gordon Ranch. This ranch features barbeque pits, water slide, lake with canoes / paddleboats, volleyball, softball,  miniature golf, obstacle course, etc. Contact these organizations for further information.
12 The film PICTURE BRIDE (1994, Kayo Hatta) will be shown at the Kingwood Branch Library of the Harris County Public Library at 6:30 pm. A 16-year-old Japanese girl journeys to Hawaii in 1918 to marry a man she has never met. Vivid portrait of the Japanese immigration to Hawaii. This film won an award at Sundance in 1995. Toshiro Mifune appears in this as his next to last film role prior to his death in 1997. Japanese and English dialog.
13 Student-Teacher Japanese Conversation Group meets at 7:00 pm the Ginza on San Felipe. This is a great opportunity for students to socialize and speak Japanese in a casual setting. Like other MeetUp events, this is organized using the MeetUp WWW site.
13 - 15 Anime Mini-Convention takes place at 4:30 pm each day at the Freeman branch of the Harris County Public Library. Call 281-488-1906 for more information.
15 "Making a Japanese Lantern" is taught at the Kingwood branch of the Harris County Public Library. Call Connie Dye at 281-360-6804 for information.
17 A Sushi cooking class is scheduled to be taught at the Rattan Pan-Asian Bistro, 1396 Eldridge Parkway, by chef James E. McMillan. Call 281-556-9888 for information.
20 Program "Fascinating Facts of Japan" is presented at 4:00 pm at the Aldine Branch Library  of the Harris County Public Library. Contact the Japan America Society of Houston to obtain further information, 713-962-0121.
20 Likely date of informal get-together of the Japanese Association of Greater Houston, beginning at 6:30 pm, at a location which will be announced later. Contact the Japanese Association of Greater Houston for further information. The official language for all talk at JAGH is Japanese.
22 Sushi making class "Mastering Sushi" is taught by Dan Capello at Sur La Table in the River Oaks shopping center area, starting at 6:30 pm. Call 713-533-0959 for more information.

29 Program on Japan is presented as part of the Asian Pacific Heritage Month at the Atascocita branch of the Harris County Public Library at 7:00 pm. This includes anime-manga, learning Go, and tea ceremony. Contact Darla at 281-812-2162 for further information.
