11 Student-Teacher Japanese Conversation Group will meet at 7:00 pm at the Sakana Japanese Grill (6540 San Felipe). An RSVP is required for the meeting as always. This is a great opportunity for students to socialize and speak Japanese in a casual setting. There will be optional karaoke after the meeting as a Shinnenkai. Like other MeetUp events, this is organized using the MeetUp WWW site.
14 - 15 The anime film PARUMU NO KI, directed by Takashi Nakamura, will be shown at the Rice Cinema at 8:00 pm. Japanese with English subtitles. Call 713-348-3138 for further information.
15 Opening reception for exhibit by artist Kiriko Shirobayashi 6 - 8 pm with talk by the artist at 6:30 pm at De Santos Gallery, 1724-A Richmond Ave. Call 713-520-1200 for more information.
15 Houston area JROCK (Japanese rock music) meeting will be held at 3:00 pm at site selected by on-line voting if enough people join, participate in on-line voting, and RSVP. Like other MeetUp events, this is organized using the MeetUp WWW site.

The anime convention ChibiCon will be held at Montgomery College about 30 miles to the north of Houston on Saturday, Jan. 15th. See the WWW site for more information.

16 Party sushi - fun and fancy sushi class is taught at Leisure Learning as course 3159A. Call 713-529-4414 for more information.
16 Meeting and pot-luck dinner will be held by the  Houston Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. Contact the league directly for more information.
16 Annual Shinnenkai of the Japanese Association of Greater Houston will start at 11:00 am (general meeting) and again at 12:00 noon (Shinnenkai) at the US Asia Center, 11122 Bellaire Blvd. This is free for members, students, and families thereof, but there is a $10 per person charge for non-members. An RSVP by January 15 should be provided, 713-621-2324. The official language for all talk at JAGH events is Japanese. Events include Mochitsuki, kite flying, Karuta, a karaoke contest, etc.
20 Ikebana 101 is taught at Kubos at 6:30 pm. This course includes hands-on instruction, container, and flowers. Cost is $60 - $45 per person. Call 713-528-7878 for more information.

23 A shakuhachi and koto performance will be held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston at 2:00 pm in the Caroline Wiess Law building. This will feature the shakuhachi master Yoshio Kurahashi and the koto performer Ayako Kurahashi, husband team and wife from Kyoto. January 28 - 30 The original film Godzilla is shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston at 9:00 pm on January 28, 2:00 pm and 7 pm on January 29, and 7:00 pm on January 30. This is a restored print which includes 40 minutes of previously unseen footage.
