![]() My personal Psion Series 7. |
I had an interesting experience recently when my Psion Series
7 decided that the screen would cease to function or, at
least, only function periodically.
It had been a problem that had escalated in the preceding four or five months which started as a flickering in the screen until a point where the screen did not display anything at all. Apart from the fact that my Psion is the most important tool that I used it was also, in my personal experience, very unusual for a Psion to go wrong. As I work abroad there is no support for my machine in the country in which I work. Therefore, I knew that I would have to find a place in the UK to repair my machine on one of my visits back. As my machine is about one-and-a-half years old I knew that the warranty had expired a long-time previously and any cost involved would have to be borne by me personally. I tried all the usual channels but to no avail. This series seven machine is not prepared by the normal channels and I did not seem to be able to find a place which could repair the machine. However, in the end, I contacted Clove Technology and asked them if they could help. They gave me a contact number for the Psion service and repair centre. I telephoned them and found that, in fact, they only repaired the Series 3 and Series 5 machines but they gave me the telephone number of the repair centre that would look after my Series 7. I duly telephoned them and explained the problem. To my complete surprise they offered to repair the machine free of charge and, not only that, but to collect and deliver it by courier from my home address. It turns out that in some of the early machines there was a screen problem which they were covering under their normal warranty and my machine fitted the criteria. All that remained was for me to bring the machine back to the UK and telephone them 24 hours prior to the request for collection. On my next available weekend in the UK I brought the machine back and, upon my return to work, telephoned them on the Monday morning with a request that they collect the machine on the Tuesday. The gentleman that I spoke to was not prepared to give a guarantee that they would collect the machine on the Tuesday but said that they would hope that the collection would be made. Indeed the machine was collected on the Tuesday and delivered back to my home on the Friday afternoon. The machine is performed perfectly since and I am extremely happy to have my old faithful back! What service! Congratulations to Psion. |
