Long before written
history, man has been fascinated by the sea. Yet only a few have been fortunate to explore it
first-hand. Come aboard and come about for an exciting two week sailing and oceanography
expedition. Your experience will begin in Oyster Bay where you will learn to
sail Sunfish, dinghies, Optimists, Capris and Sonars. |
During the second week of
your adventure, you will set sail aboard the historic and newly renovated oyster sloop
"Christeen" in Oyster bay. Students will learn the skills used by commercial
fisherman including: setting oyster dredges, pulling fish and lobster pots, reading nautical
charts, collecting bottom sediments and plankton, and measuring the physical and chemical
properties of sea water. Students will also be introduced to some methods used to culture
shellfish and other marine animals for food; i.e., floating lantern nets to grow oyster
and clams and Island.
