These workshops give parents a science option on a weekday when schools are closed. Two 1 1/2 hour sessions are offered with three age level groups: Kindergarten, Grades 1 & 2, and Grades 3 to 5. Also two 1 hour sessions are available for the Nursery level.

Nursery Level Members Fee: $10 - Non-Members: 15
Kindergarten - 5th Grade Members Fee: $12  - Non-Members Fee: $18

Dinosaurs
  Monday  - February 18

Who were the giant creatures of long ago and how did they live? Learn the differences between meat eaters and plant eaters. Discover what a fossil is and what they tell us about these great beasts.

Sticky Metal  Tuesday - February 19

What will stick to a magnet? How can you make one magnet from another? Experiment with magnets and make your own refrigerator magnet.


Lost in Space
  Wednesday - February 20

Climb aboard the space shuttle for a tour of the planets. Learn about moons, stars, and meteors. See if you can find any life in the universe.

A Shock or Two  Thursday - February 21

Do you know why you get shocked after walking on a carpet? How do you stick a balloon to a wall without tape? The answer is static electricity! Come to this hair-raising workshop to learn all about it.


Scaly Creatures
  Friday - February 22

Want to snuggle with a snake, love a lizard, or touch a turtle? Here's your chance. Meet the Museum's reptiles and make on of your own to take home.

Rainbow Maker  Monday - April 1

Come to this colorful workshop and find out where to look for rainbows. Learn how colors mix together as you meet ROYGBIV.

Puzzle of Popcorn  Tuesday - April 2

What is popcorn and why does it pop? Come and examine this tasty seed. Taste the different kinds of popcorn, and then take home the beginnings of your own popcorn plant.

Slimy Science  Wednesday - April 3

Come to the Science Museum and learn about chemistry as you make all kinds of slimy stuff. Make a gooey mess as you learn what oobleck is. Take come slime home.

What's a Habitat  Thursday - April 4

Any place an animal calls home is a habitat. Explore the outside world as we discover the different places where an animal might live.

Now You See Them...  Friday - April 5

Discover the hidden world around us. Learn how to find animals that are camouflaged to match their surroundings. Design some of your own camouflaged creatures.

Winter Wonderland
  Monday  - February 18

Join us for a walk through Leads Pond Preserve during this special wintery season. Learn how plants and animals deal with the cold temperatures and snowy weather. Bundle up as we join the animals in the forest and discover the wonders of winter.

Rainbow of Colors  Tuesday - February 19

Where do rainbows come from? Find out in this colorful class. Learn how to mix some colors together and take other colors apart.


Be A Bird
  Thursday - February 20

Try your wings in this workshop as we discover the behavior and anatomy of birds. Why do some birds fly and some don't? Learn how different birds are adapted for hunting and eating.

Science of Toys  Thursday - February 21

Everybody loves to play with toys. But if you want to understand the science behind your favorites, then join the staff at the Science Museum. Play with some spinning, flying, and popping toys and discover the physics that make them work.


Boneless Bodies
  Friday - February 22

Interested in small creatures that crawl, fly, hide, or burrow? Examine live and preserved specimens. Explore the difference between the animals that have shells on the outside and no bones on the inside.

Gourmet Galaxy  Monday - April 1

Come to the Museum and discover just how big the solar system really is. Compare the size of the planets to the sun. Then eat our edible version of them.

Water Wonders  Tuesday - April 2

What would the world be without water? We wouldn't have crystal blue oceans or blue skies. Join us as we learn about the magical properties of water.

Opposites Attract  Wednesday - April 3

The magic of science will be examined by studying magnetism and static electricity. Discover how these to principles of science are related. Make a magnet to take home.

Tiny Things  Thursday - April 4

Study things that are so tiny they are invisible without the help of a microscope. Then look at other things and be surprised to find out that when magnified, they weren't what you thought you saw when you looked with your eyes alone.

Eco Adventures  Friday - April 5

Learn about the science of ecology and why it's important. Discover how a tree is really nature's apartment house. Study how plants and animals depend on each other to form a giant food web.

Who Eats Who?
  Monday  - February 18

All animals need to eat. Learn which are prey. Find out how to play the food web game. Dissect an owl pellet to determine what one predator eats.

Gumdrop Construction  Tuesday - February 19

Can you build a super strong bridge? Would a building fall down it it's too tall? Find out as you build your own structures. We'll use gumdrops, marshmallows, and more. 


Measure Your Way Through The Kitchen
  Wednesday - February 20

Measuring, weighing and mixing are all important parts of science as well as cooking. Perfect your measuring skills as you make some tasty treats in this delicious workshop.

Bone Day  Thursday - February 21

Prickly pear, gila monsters, and bearded dragons just to name a few. Learn all about the animals and plants that inhabit the world's dusty deserts. Discover the beauty in these dry yet lively places.


Slime, Goo & Ooze
  Friday - February 22

Would you like to learn how to make your own slime? Then come to this wacky workshop. Make slime, flubber, and silly putty! Learn about chemistry as you learn about these playful plastics.

Flying Fun  Monday - April 1

Have you ever wanted to fly? Come to this workshop and learn the principles behind flight. Find out about lift, and why it doesn't work for us. Experiment with different flying machines and make one of your own.

Who's at the Pond?  Tuesday - April 2

Explore Leeds Pond and its neighboring marsh. Discover what animals and plants live there. Use your eyes, ears, and nose to learn about these special habitats.

Flower Power  Wednesday - April 3

Study the inside of a flower and all its important parts. Discover that different flowers smell differently. Learn how color plays a role in the life of a flower.

Bubbleology  Thursday - April 4

Study the art of making bubbles and see how it is really science! Learn the chemistry behind turning soap and water into "bubble juice" Try to make different shaped bubbles.

Eggstraordinary  Friday - April 5

Eggsplore the wonderful world of eggs. Find out just how strong an egg can be. Eggsamine the physics of eggs in this unusual eggssciting program.

Crayfish Dissection
  Monday  - February 18

Using probes, forceps, and scissors, students get a close-up look at an invertebrate animal. See how different their respiratory, digestive, and circulatory systems are from our own

Note: There is a materials fee of $1 per child.

Rat Race  Tuesday - February 19

How fast could you get through a maze to win the cheese? Work with our mice and rats and see which rodent will win. Find out first hand how intelligent these critters really are.


Maple Sugaring
  Wednesday - February 20

Now is the time of year when sap runs in the maple trees. Come to this workshop and learn how to collect the sap and turn it into delicious maple syrup.

Mystery Powders  Thursday - February 21

Using various steps in the scientific method, as well as some chemical analysis, learn to solve the mystery of white powders.


Animation
  Friday - February 22

Learn about vision and how it makes movies possible. Explore the world of optical illusions and let your eyes fool you. Make your own zoetrope and become an amateur animator

Spring Recess

Roller Coaster Fun  Monday  - February 18

Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for fun! You will build and design a marble coaster that loops and twirls, stretching the laws of physics. The class will learn how your favorite rides are built and work.

Mad Science  Tuesday - February 19

Become a mad scientist as you learn about how mistakes turn into great discoveries. You can learn about chemical concoctions that make a mess and also clean the lab at the same time. Watch our mad scientist cause explosions and smoke.


Orienteering
  Wednesday - February 20

Follow the path to SMLI and discover how fun it is to find your way. Over the hills and through the woods to discover a treasure we go! Learn how to use a compass and read maps.

Light & Lasers  Thursday - February 21

Become a wizard of light and lasers. Learn how light bounces, bends, and disappears.


Candy Chemistry
  Friday - February 22

Candy & Chocolate are the topic of this sweet workshop. Learn how candy is made using science as your guide. Make some tasty treats.
