Information on Regional and Community Development
Regional development is one of the key areas of European Commission spending. The redistribution from the richer to the poorer member states is done through the Structural Funds, with the aim of economic regeneration, employment creation, and decreasing the inequalities between regions.

Effective regional development strategies depend on the integration of local actors into the process, and the EC acknowledges this in the way that it plans the use of the Structural Funds. Such consultation needs to happen at all levels, in order to form a clear direction and some consensus behind it.

England can learn something from Europe in the development of local and regional strategies for economic and regional development. the need for real and effective partnership work is one which has not been taken on board by everyone as yet, even though experience shows this is the best way forward.
