Millions of people around the world, in a desire to cultivate humanistic values, respect for the dignity of life and hope for the future of the planet, base their lives on the Buddhism of Nichiren Dasihonin.
SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL (SGI) is a lay society of individuals practising this Buddhism. As an active Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) of the United Nations, the SGI is dedicated to peace through education and culture.
Individual members in over 115 countries share this vision by challenging their own negative tendancies in order to reveal the life-force, compassion and wisdom, inherent in all living beings and helping others to do the same. Collectively they raise money for and collect signatures in support of refugees, hunger and environmental projects.

Myoho Renge Kyo is the title of the Lotus Sutra which is the ultimate teaching of the first recorded Buddha known variously as SIDDHARTHA or SHAKYAMUNI. In this he teaches of the inherent nature of Buddhahood, common to, although latent in, all living beings.
Nichiren Daishonin taught that by chanting Nam (devotion to) Myoho Renge Kyo we can activate Buddhahhod (to reveal wisdom, compassion, courage and life-force) and consequently, the power to affect our own destiny and that of our environment.
The practice that Nichiren Daishonin taught, over 700 years ago, has a profound and revolutionary impact on ordinary, everyday life: an impact which enables one to fully realise one's unique potential and by overcoming the negative impulses inherent in life to develop the greatest possible value in any situation.
It does not offer a code of conduct or promote a particular lifestyle. Instead faith is built through regularly chanting NAM MYOHO RENGE KYO morning and evening, learning the philosophy and true spirit of Buddhism by studying the writings of Nichiren Daishonin and enabling others to do the same.
In this way it is a balance practice for oneself and others
