Camp Berger, fronting on Park Pond in Winchester, has been made possible by the generous gift of a tract of land by Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Berger to the Connecticut State Grange. This gift is a memorial to Mr. Berger's mother, Maud Isbell Berger.
The camp became a reality through the splendid cooperation of many Granges, committees, and individuals, making possible the erection of twelve cabins, a dining-recreation hall with a modem kitchen, staff house, a craft room and a caretaker's cottage. Swimming and boating areas are located on Park Pond which is a 75 acre lake with crystal clear water. The camp's facilities and natural beauty make it an ideal location for a fine camping experience. Special contributions have made possible the development of the Jerry Keech Memorial Athletic Field which includes a large hardtop area for games and roller skating. The most recent major improvements include a large, convenient parking area, improved entrance road, aluminum docks, 4-square area at lower camp and new fishing dock.
PURPOSE ...
The purpose in organizing the Connecticut State Grange camping program was to give the Junior Grange members those opportunities afforded by our youth organizations in the rewards of a camping experience.
Since that time camping privileges have been extended to other than J.G. members in an effort to give boys and girls in Connecticut the knowledge and skills gained from outdoor living as well as the development of rich and lasting friendships.
It is the desire of the Board of Trustees to give every child be given an opportunity to attend camp by keeping the cost within the reach of all and to aid all campers in attaining happy hearts, healthy minds and bodies and generous spirits, in a democratic situation, amid beautiful and inspiring surroundings.
Camp Berger is open to all boys and girls ages 7 to 14 without regard to race, color, national origin, or religion. Child must be seven years old by July 1, 1996. Campers or parents do not have to be Grange members.
