He teachers the practical fundamentals for the full range of graphics-intensive programs, including data display, multimedia, and games. Readers will learn how to both create entire graphics applications and add sophisticated graphics capabilities to nongraphics applications. CD-Rom is included.[Visual Basic Graphics Programming covers: VB controls programming; graphics programming with the Windows 95 API; Image processing; animation, 2D, and 3D graphics; shading models, ray tracing, and radiosity; and geometric and other graphics algorithms for VB. |

Bug prevention, detection, and eradication! Every program more than 10 lines
long contains at least one bug.
This statement may not be provable, but it is generally a good assumption. No matter how careful you are, your program will probably
contain some bugs. Even if the code is perfect, it must be prepared to handle unexpected conditions such as missing files, network failure,
and other applications using all of the system's resources.
This book teaches programming skills that every Visual Basic developer should have. It explains ways to minimize the number of errors in
your programs, methods for exposing errors so they are easy to fix, and techniques for correctly handling unexpected errors that do
occur.
Unlike my other books, this one is not aimed only at intermediate and advanced programmers. While it does describe some intermediate
and advanced techniques, it also gives beginners a chance to skip years ahead on the bug chasing learning curve. No matter what your
current skill level, you are sure to find something useful in this book.
Learn in hours what took me more than a dozen years of painful experience to learn.
The author, Steve Holzner, September 12, 1998 Designed to be the only
Visual Basic book you'll ever need. This book attempts to be - literally -
as comprehensive on the subject as Visual Basic as it's possible to be. In
fact, the original manuscript was over 1600 pages long - too long for modern
softcover bindings! By putting all the code listings on the accompanying CD
and through formatting changes, we finally got the book down to its present
size, 1095 pages, without omitting any material. I've written many Visual
Basic books before, including books that have topped the market, but this is
the complete super book, designed to cover any area of Visual Basic you
need, and cover it in depth. I honestly believe the coverage is head and
shoulders above any Visual Basic other book out there. There are thirty
chapters and nearly 800 examples covering Visual Basic from the basics to
the very advanced: from the Internet to databases, from multimedia to
ActiveX, from the Windows registry to creating e-mail programs, from flat
scroll bars to pop-up menus, from creating ftp programs to adding on-line
registration to your applications (the Table of Contents alone is twenty
three pages long). Just about every Visual Basic control that comes with the
product is covered in depth - a claim I don't think any other book can make.
All in all, this book was written to represent the new standard in Visual
Basic coverage, more complete - and more accessible - than ever before. Did
I reach that goal? You're the only one who can decide - please write to the
publisher with feedback and suggestions what you'd like to see in future
editions - I really want to make sure this book stays as complete as it's
possible to make it!

Visual Basic Enters The Client/Server And Internet World
This book was a labor of love for me and Kurt. Between us, we have some 40 years of real-world experience in developing
high-powered business systems. We spent months tearing apart Visual Basic 6 and have put together a practical, no-hype book showing
you how to create scalable, reliable client/server applications with VB6 from traditional two-tiered architectures through robust, Internet
based n-tiered systems. The book comes complete with dozens of working code samples.
VB6 is a solid tool but there are bugs and pitfalls. We have found most of these and show you how to avoid some and work around the
rest.
The book begins with three chapters providing an overview of network issues, database platforms, database design, and usage of SQL.
Chapter 4 compares and contrasts the many different database access models available to the Visual Basic developer.
In Chapters 5 and 6, DAO and RDO are covered in depth while Chapter 7 is a tutorial on the new ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) and
OLE DB. Chapter 8 shows you techniques for converting from DAO and RDO to ADO.
In Chapter 9, you are shown more advanced ADO techniques and the beginnings of an object-oriented approach to database
programming. Chapter 10 continues this with the creation of local and remote business objects, Automation, and so on. Chapter 11 then
delves into advanced database techniques from transaction and concurrency management to the creation and usage of stored procedures
and triggers.
Kurt takes over for Chapters 12 through 15 where he shows you how to create Internet based applications using IIS, DHTML, XML,
and so forth. Kurt goes far beyond what you will see in most books and takes you farther than I think Microsoft probably envisioned.
Kurt and I are very excited about this book. We think you will be too.

I want your feedback! Like you, I got tired of "comprehensive" books that
didn't cover everything or just rehashed the manuals. We tried to make this
book as comprehensive as possible and included many real-world examples that
you can use and adapt. As it's a large and complicated product, we probably
missed some things. If you have favorite topics that didn't get heavy
coverage in the book or if you come up with some useful variations on the
examples we did, please send them to me at vb6bible@northcomp.com and we'll
be sure to cover them the next time around. We're working hard to make this
the book that you want to keep next to your computer while you program.
Thanks for purchasing the book!
