1. Compact Disc Pressing History (EMI Records):
   1. 1986 - In July 1985, EMI Music began conversion of its videodisc manufacturing facilities in Australia to the manufacture of compact discs. CD production began in early 1986 by EMI Music Group Australasia, a subsidiary of EMI Music.
   2. 1992 - In 1992, EMI Music Australia formed Digital Audio Technologies Australia (D.A.T.A.), a joint venture with Warner Music Australia. A D.A.T.A. compact disc manufacturing plant was established in Sydney, Australia.
   3. 2004 - In late 2004, EMI Music Australia sold Digital Audio Technologies Australia (D.A.T.A.), to Summit Technology Australia Pty Ltd, effective December 31, 2004. Summit began manufacturing EMI CDs for Australia.
      1. Label Variations (EMI Records):
         1. 1986 - Silver labels with text in black and "Manufactured and Distributed by EMI Music Group Australasia." on the label.
         2. 1992 - Silver labels with text in black and Digital Audio Technologies Australia logo on the label.

2. Compact Disc Pressing History (CBS / Sony Records):
   1. 1984/1985 - Prior to any compact disc manufacturing plants in Australia, CDs were manufactured in Japan for the Australian market.
   2. 1985 - The first CBS pressing plant for compact discs in Australia was opened by Disctronics Australia (which later became Pacific Mirror Image, then Southern Star Duplitek, and now Technicolor) in Braseide, Australia. Disctronics not only pressed CDs for CBS, but also pressed copies of Dark Side of the Moon for EMI Music Group Australasia.
   3. 1987 - In July 1987, Sony Corporation opened a CD pressing plant in Salzburg, Austria. Some CDs for Australia were mastered / pressed at the plant in Austria and have "DADC AUSTRIA" in the matrix.
   4. 1988 - On January 5, 1988, the Sony Corporation of Japan purchased CBS Records, Inc. worldwide.
   5. 1991 - On January 11, 1991, CBS Records Australia became "Sony Music Australia Limited." Also in 1991, Sony Corporation bought the rights to the exclusive use of the "Columbia" label in Australia from EMI Records. And Sony renamed its entertainment division as "Sony Music Entertainment, Inc."
   6. 1992 - In December 1992, Sony opened the Hi-Tech CD Manufacturing Plant in Huntingwood.
   7. 1995 - On February 23, 1995, Sony Music Australia Limited changed its name to "Sony Music Entertainment (Australia) Limited."
   8. 2004 - In 2004, Sony merged its music division with Bertelsmann AG's BMG unit and became "Sony BMG."
      1. Label Variations (CBS / Sony Records):
         1. 1984 - Silver labels with text in black and "CBS" on label.
         2. 1985 - Silver labels with verticle red strip on left and horizontal red strip on right, and "Made in Australia by Disctronics Limited" and "CBS" on the label.
         3. 1991 - Red labels with "Columbia" at top and "Manufactured in Australia by Sony Music Australia Limited" on the label.
         4. 1992 - Red labels with "Columbia" at top and "Sony Music Entertainment, Inc." on the label
         5. 1992 - Silver labels with "Columbia" in red and "Sony Music Entertainment, Inc." on the label.
         6. 1995 - Silver labels with "Columbia" in red and "Manufactured in Australia by Sony Music Entertainment (Australia) Limited" on the label.

3. Cover Text (CBS / Sony Records): Many of the early CBS issues have the text "Made in Japan by CBS/Sony / Distribution CBS Records CBS Disques S.A." on the covers of the CDs. This text does not mean that the cover was printed in Japan. It only refers to the fact that Sony originally made the CDs in Japan.

4. Label Codes: Label codes are the 4 digit numbers that are found on the labels of some CDs. These label codes are designated by the IFPI to indicate the company that owns the rights to the property on the CD. Some of the registered labels codes are:
   1. LC 0149 - CBS Records
   2. LC 0542 - EMI Records

5. Matrix Information: Matrix information is the letters and numbers printed on a compact disc in the mirror band near the center hole of a compact disc. (matrix information may be read either from the top side, or label side, of a CD, or from the bottom side of the CD). The matrix information tells alot about the pressing history of the particular CD. The following matrix information can be found on many Australian compact discs:
   1. Catalog number - the identifying number given to the release by the record company.
   2. Manufacturer's Work Order Number - This often is in the form of a bar code.
   3. Mastering Information - On some CDs, the ,matrix information indicates the the father, the mother, and the stamper.
   4. Pressing Plant - Pressing plant information is often found in the matrix. For example, the words "MADE BY DISCTRONICS" in a matrix indicate that the CD was mastered and pressed at the Disctronics CD pressing plant.
   5. SID Codes - On many CDs, there are two Source Identification Codes (SID Code) in the matrix band. The SID Code, which was introduced in April 1994, consists of the letters IFPI (which stands for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), followed by 4 or 5 additional characters. There are two different SID Codes found on CDs:
      1. Mastering Code - The first SID Code in the matrix band is the "Mastering Code." The Mastering Code begins with "IFPI" followed by a sequence of digits beginning with the letter L, followed by two numbers that indicate the pressing plant, and then 1 or 2 additional digits that indicate the Laser Beam Recorder (LBR) that cut the glass master. The Mastering Code is put on the CD at the time the glass master of the CD is cut by the LBR, and it appears on all subsequent pressings of the CD sourced from that specific glass master.
      2. Mould Code - The second SID Code on a CD is the "Mould Code." The Mould Code begins with "ifpi" followed by two digits that indicate the specific pressing plant that pressed the disc, and two or three additional digits that indicate the unique mould or stamper that pressed the CD.

         2. 28 - Toshiba / EMI, Japan
         3. 46 - Technicolor, Australia
         4. 61 - Cinram Inc.
         5. 65 - Sony Music Entertainment Australia
         6. 94 - Sony DADC Austria
