Mike and Amateur Radio.

I first developed an interest in radio when I made a crystal set as a young boy in the early 50's. I then went along to a local radio club in Bexleyheath as a teenager and later learnt some real electronics at University. When I took over the Science Department at Kelly College in1975 the Headmaster asked me to develop the Amateur Radio Society G4COF that had been founded by my predecessor Robin Bellerby G3ZYE. I took my RAE exam in1976 and obtained the call sign G8ONR.

The above picture was taken many years ago and shows me with two of Kellys' pupils who obtained their call signs when there. Mark Radford G8UDH and Julie Gibson, who later become the first female pilot for the RAF.

The picture above shows some of the radio equipment in my former lab at Kelly College. In the foreground is Leo Tucker-Brown who obtained the call sign G7GQE.

The Station at Kelly, GX4COF, has facilities to work on all the HF bands and the 2m VHF, and 70cm UHF bands. There is also an ATV set and an active interest in packet. To find out more visit the amateur radio section of the Kelly College site by clicking below.

At home I operate on 2m and 70cm, and intend to develop my packet station. One day I will also do my morse and get on HF!
