Rough Guide

Michael's, self-opinionated Classical Gas Rough Guide to what's on. I have added some categories to help newcomers to decide if you want to take part or not. At this stage the categories are mine, either from personal experience, reputation or in some cases from the organisers propaganda. Please let me know if you disagree with these ratings!

Rough

Tough

Please remember this is a relative term. You can't go Classic Trialling without some risk or damage to your machinery. I would advise you spectate, marshal or passenger on an event first!
This refers to how "competitive" the event is.
1. Suitable for cars with only basic preparation with little risk of damage providing you take care. No tree weaving or huge rocks between the ruts 1. Beginners stand a chance of getting up quite a few hills and getting past the 12 marker on all of them! Experts may clean the lot and find the sections a bit boring.
2. Halfway between 1 and 3! 2. Halfway between 1 and 3!
3. Well prepared cars only. Quite a high risk of damage, either from rocks underneath or from sliding into trees, either on the way up or when trying to reverse down. 3. Competitive for Experts. Beginners could fail to get to the first corner on many sections!

Exeter Trial - Bikes and Cars

I have reclassified the Exeter as 2 verging on 3 for roughness. You would stand a fair chance of damaging your Pride and Joy on these hills. However, you can compete in the MCC's class 0 with little fear of damaging your pride and joy.

Clee Hills Trial - Cars - Very nice event run in the Midlands.

Notes from 2002 event - Start and finish at The Boyne Arms, Burwarton, Shropshire, about 10 miles SW of Bridgenorth on the B4364 (map ref 138/618851). The organisers are Simon Woodhall and Barbera Selkirk.
The 2002 evolved under the stewardship  of Simon Woodhall and Barbera Selkirk. Lots of long hills, all but one on real tracks so very little "Micky Mouse" stuff. Running in January it can get a bit sticky. Because of this I have reclassifeid the "toughness" up to 2.
Great views if the weather is kind enough. The most proffessional route card you will ever see, plenty of recovery and lots of friendly proffessional marshalls.  The Midland Automobile Club run a class 0 which you can enter if you are a member of the MCC (aren't we all?). This is designed for novice drivers and those with more "delicate" cars.

Taw & Torridge Classic Trial - For Bikes and Cars - ACTC & ASWMC Championships.

I am grateful for these notes from Simon Woodhall "The new start at The West Country Inn, gives a new perspective to the event, taking out the woods at the Torridge end. It also makes the trial much closer for those coming from outside of the South West.   The North Devon link road making the journey  from the M5 at Taunton very quick.  The route is quite short, so there are no late nights getting back to the Home Counties on the Sunday night.   Now that the Lands End has gone a different way, this trial is your only chance to have a go at Cutliffe Lane.   Great weather and a friendly atmosphere make for a
great season opener and with 3 weeks between it and the Edinburgh, time toresolve even the worse of disasters.   Start the season in grand style with
so real west country fun.

Roger Pole is C of C, and if he doesn't know what he's doing........"

Notes from 2002 --   For Bikes and Cars. First competitor starts at 09.00 from The West Country Inn, 5 miles North of Kilkhampton on the A39. MR 190271194. "....the format of this years event is rather different from previous years, this is partly because we do not wish the event to become "stale"  but also sections in the north (Taw area) have undegone changes which in some cases have made them less competitive....."
I don't have any electronic contact information or phone numbers but you can contact the organisers at :- J. Mattin, Meddon Farnhouse, Meddon, Hartland, Bideford, Devon, EX39 6HD

The 95 mile route will comprise 14 sections and 2 special tests and will commence with a couple of easier hills to gear up for the rest of the event. There will be a mixture of old favourites and new hills and providing the weather is not to good Lee Cross, Tillerton, Northwood, Tipley and Simms ahould provide some entertainment."

Curborough Reliability Trial - Information from the MCC Newsletter :-

"Similar in nature to a Testing Trial on Tarmac, this time the empasis is not about absolute speed overall but on consistency of times between each round. There are five individual tests planned, two of which use the Curborough Sprint Course, the others the roads around the course. We aim to run at least two, maybe three rounds on the day. There is no rough ground to traverseso the event is suitable for any vehicle and engine power is not a deciding factor". Further information from the MCC Web Site

Mechanic's Trial - Classic - One Day Road Event - Click here for more details

"This year the Mechanics Trial will be full road classic with a route of approximately 100 miles and around 14 sections. The sections will include some that have never been used before, some that were used many years ago, and others that are no longer regulars on the Cotswold Clouds.
The 2002 Mechanics is a 'distant cousin' of the twice-cancelled and finally-abandoned Anniversary Trial. The organising team plan to use some of the new sections discovered, and historic sections re-discovered, when planning the Anniversary Trial together with some totally new sections. However, unlike the Anniversary Trial, the Mechanics will be run to a traditional one-day format and with tougher sections. Expect something much more like the 'Clouds but on sections most of you will never have seen before."

Hardy classic Trial - Bikes & Cars

Starts 08.00 at The Freashwater Holiday Park, Burton Bradstock, Bridport 193/478901

Secretary of the meeting is Mervyn Brake

I've never done the event but it does have a reputation for having quite a few artificial, PCT style, sections which can be a bit dodgy when reversing back down. However, this year the organisers will be omiting the Bovington sections while retaining Clinton & Normans Hump and adding some new sections in West Dorset.
