Kenya Safari Photos

Copyright 1998 by Michael J. Blotzer
We recently visited Kenya for a week-long photo safari. We arrived in Nairobi on a Saturday and spent two nights in Samburu, one night at Aberdare, one night at Lake Nakuru, and two nights in the Masai Mara before returning to Nairobi and our flight home. The trip exceeded all our expectations. Kenya is a country with great natural beauty and friendly, handsome people. I highly recommend a Kenya safari to anyone who likes to observe animals in their natural environment.

The views of the animals were spectacular and we collected about 800 still photos and over 4 hours of 8 mm video tape. The still images you see here were grabbed from the video tape using a "Snappy" frame grabber borrowed from a friend. The images were then reduced from 1024 x 768 to roughly 250 x 200 GIF images to improve image sharpness and reduce size for reasonable transfer times by modem. I still have lots video to review and grab -- elephants, two more species of giraffe, rhino, cape buffalo, and various birds.

I hope you enjoy these images. Please note that they are all Copyrighted 1998 by Michael J. Blotzer and cannot be used without written permission. Click here to return to my home page

Cheetah carefully keeping an eye on a hyena that is circling him at about 50 meters. Masai Mara.

A closer view of our friend still watching the hyena.
A different cheetah on a different day, leaping across a water filled ditched to escape the tourists. Masai Mara

Crown Crane hunting insects in the short savanna grasses.
A mother lion and two cubs in Samburu National Park. This elephant was part of a herd of about 15 that was grazing in the evening hours at Masai Mara.

A colorful flycatcher near our tents at Masai Mara.
Reticulated Giraffe eating Acacia leaves in Samburu National Park.

These Grant's Gazelles aren't mooning the camera. They're wagging their tails in greeting. Samburu National Park.

Three Giraffes in the same area as the previous one. The two in the rear are "necking" -- fighting by swinging their necks and heads against each other. Samburu National Park.

A lion feeding on the inside of a fresh Cape Buffalo kill. The were five other lions in the area of this spectacular scene. Samburu National Park.

This leopard is about 10 meters up in the top of an Acacia tree in the Masai Mara. It was near dusk, so the coloring of the photo does not do this handsome fellow justice.

Mature male Lion in the Masai Mara. When they look at you they make you feel like you're just another part of their buffet.

Monitor Lizard on top of a termite mound. Samburu National Park.

Oryx grazing in Samburu National Park.

Male and female Ostrich in Masai Mara. These birds look much more beautiful in the wild than at the zoo. One of our safari vans in Samburu National Park observing the Reticulated Giraffes.
