This man's name is Punia. He lives in a small village called Naranag, just north of Srinagar. He is call a Pahari (Mountain) Gujjar or Settled Gujjar. The peak behind him is called Haramukh, 16,872 ft.

This shot is typical of a Bakarwal Gujjar. The colorful turban with the distinctive style of wrap is in contrast with the Dodhi Gujjar below.
This man is a Dodhi Gujjar. Often call the Buffalo Gujjars. They are the milk men of their area. Where the Bakarwal herd sheep the Dodhi Gujjar herd Water Buffalo.

A turban can range from a fine store bought turban to anything from a dupta (a woman's shawl) to an old rag. Somehow they manage to make even an old rag elegant.
Gujjar men are very family oriented.

This old Gujjar patriarch wears an Afghani topi (hat). He is from Pakistan. This photo was taken just outside of Rawalpindi.
Often Gujjar men will hire themselves out as porters or pony men for trekking parties.
