Summer Vacation
August, 1995 in Niihama, Ehime prefecture, Japan

The highlight of the summer vacation every year for our children is to visit their grandparents in Niihama, Shikoku-island during Obon season.
Yuka-chan and Saki-chan, their cousins, also spend about a week there.
Last year we flew from Tokyo to Takamatsu airport, then drove to Niihama by rent-a-car together. Unfortunately their father, usually an important member for our trip, could'nt take a vacation this time.
We go swimming both in the sea and pool, play with fireworks, go to the river, go to Bon-odori festival, celebrate the birthday of my wife's mother, and so on.

Bathing spot in Sakurai.
Yuka-chan was busy collecting shells and seaweeds.
Eiji was very happy beried in the sand.

The girls were quite fearless with the fire
compared to chickenhearted Eiji.

Minetopia Besshi, a recreation center built
on the site of an abandoned once famous copper mine.
Dreaming to be rich, heading where we can wash for gold
as one of the attractions there. SV06.JPG (34KB) Aug.15
In front of a signboard which explains how to wash
gold using a pan. Did we become rich?
The answer is they have to earn money
by holding these attractions.

In a river.
On the way back from Minetopia we enjoyed walking
along and in a river. We found many small fishes in the water.

A wooden suspension bridge.
You can see houses with a tiled roof common in Japan.
The houses themselves may be rather old-fashioned,
but not rare in the coutryside. SV11.JPG (35KB) Aug.15
