Poison Penmanship

The Language Policy Web Site generates a substantial amount of comment, most of it intelligent and gratifying. Your webmaster greatly appreciates (but is far too modest to publish) messages that could be called fan mail. I also hear from plenty of skeptics whose civil comments deserve, and usually receive, a response. Then there's the hate mail: a small minority of messages that are offensive, tedious, and predictable. These go straight to the Recycle Bin. Finally, I receive a few criticisms that – despite their hostility – raise issues of significance and thus engage me in debate. This page is devoted to such exchanges that may be of interest to readers.
