This service developed from one partially funded nurse into a well recognised team,
comprising 3 respiratory nurse specialists Pauline Berry, Gill Ledger and Janet Parkinson.
The team was primarily developed to promote individual self management of the adult asthmatic in the hospital and provide a seamless transition into primary care. This service continues, but expansion into other areas of respiratory support has developed to include care of the COPD patients, LTOT implementation, education, re-evaluation and home visits.
Team knowledge and recognition of areas requiring development have led to the following initiatives:
Development of new documentation in line with National COPD Guide-lines to
improve treatment and care in this area.
Oxylite Loan System.
Trialing of Capillary Blood Sampling.
BTS and Royal College of Physicians
National COPD Audit.
Research into Pulmonary Rehabilitation including the continuation at a local gym and the setting up of a local Breathe Easy Group through co-ordination of a multi-disciplinary team.
Audit of the Blackpool Asthma Plan in 34 GP practices, funded by one year Clinical Audit Secondment and presented at Royal College of Physicians and audit meetings.
Innovative way of treating uncontrolled severe nocturnal asthma.
Direct admission for brittle asthmatics.
District wide asthma audit. Changing of documentation to include 3 national core questions.
