Enthusiasm grew for pulmonary rehabilitation in 1995 following successes reported elsewhere.

Respiratory nurse Gill Ledger, Physiotherapist Mel Rosebury and Physician John O'Reilly collaborated to develop and obtain funding for a pilot scheme.

A clinical trial protocol was drawn up and a grant obtained from a pharmaceutical sponsor to allow part-time secondment of a respiratory nurse and physiotherapist with occupational therapist, dietetic and psychological support.
