How Do You Spell That ?

Over the course of many years adventuring, you get to see all manner of spells and magic being put to good (or evil) use. Occasionally, however, someone comes up with an unusual use for such powers that the original inventor probably never even dreamed of. In this section, we will cover, in brief, some of the more unusual uses we have come across/made us of:

BLUE LIGHT - The mage Fizban was seen to use this cantrip in the depths of Castle Ravenloft. To set the scene: The group leader, Fathomi the priest, decided to act the fool. Squatting down low in the knee-high mists of the mausoleum, Fathomi hid from the group, who started to worry about his absence - when Fathomi disappeared, he usually came back with trouble in tow ! Fathomi chose the wrong time to pop back up, right in front of an annoyed mage ! Without a moment's hesitation, Fizban let loose his magic. A very worried Fathomi didn't know what kind of spell he'd been hit by (he knew it wasn't Fizban's usual - FIREBALL), and started to panic. The rest of the group could barely contain their amusement, as a soft blue halo encircled the priest. You might think this would teach the priest to stop acting the fool - but then, you've probably not encountered Fathomi !!
CONTINUAL LIGHT - When cast inside an otherwise empty scroll case, it creates a directed beam of light, along similar lines to a modern-day torch.
ENLARGE - The elven mage Zar' used this spell to increase the size of the raft he and his colleagues were riding on, just as it was being attacked by a Giant Crocodile, resulting in the beastie taking a chunk out of the raft, rather than the adventurers. The croc obviously didn't like the taste, and decided to leave the group alone.
FIREBALL - Fizban tends to use this spell for almost anything imaginable: opening locks, making toast, scaring everyone & anyone, laying waste to large armies of undead. If it can't be done with a Fireball spell, it probably isn't worth doing !
GLYPH OF WARDING - Cast on sling bullets, this spell can turn an ordinary missile weapon into something a little more deadly. If the bullet hits, the victim can find himself on the receiving end of an electrical discharge or some other nasty effect. Well-equipped adventurers often carry around a selection of such ammunition, for use against different types of opponents.
POLYMORPH SELF - Fizban likes using this spell to turn himself into an Umber Hulk. He can then eat his way through rock. This was used to greatest effect in the cellars of Castle Ravenloft, to bypass a trap. However, Fizban failed to take into account the effect of tunneling through the foundations of one of the castle's towers, which resulted its collapse. You can guess that Count Strahd von Zarovich wasn't particularly pleased !
STONE TO FLESH - By means of a magical ring, the bard/cleric Mandos bypassed a secret door which the party were unable to locate the opening mechanism for. Having turned a large section of the rock into flesh, the group set about cutting out a large section to allow them to pass through. Not content with this novel act, he then used a PURIFY FOOD AND DRINK spell, before cooking the meat, providing his fellow adventurers with a veritable banquet !
