Ramblings of a first-level adventurer
As I left the track and approached the house, I was nervous. I'd been told that living on this farm were a group of adventurers who had survived for years (wow!) and had amassed enough wealth to be able to choose whether to go adventuring or not. Here were the kind of people stories were woven around - and I had to try and persuade them to take me with them on their next quest. I felt a little sick as I approached the door, but knocked loudly and forcefully, determined not to show it.
Some time later in the local hostelry, I found myself handing over the last of my coins for another round of drinks for my new friends. They didn't seem to have noticed a very beautiful lady sitting at the next table, staring at them and sipping water. However, the stories they were telling of their adventures grew more fantastic as the evening wore on. I don't remember any details now, but I was very tired the next morning, and only after some hours of travel did I realise we had set off on an adventure! It had something to do with the beautiful lady who was now travelling with us, and treasure - and that was enough for me. My new friends seemed to have become confused. I've no idea what made them think I was a powerful mage, I only had a few spells in my book, and hadn't had much practice. I'd had more use for picking pockets and stealing trinkets from fellow travellers than casting spells until this point.
That was the start of my first (and last?) adventure. I did so many things I've dreamed of doing all my life ..….. sailing down the coast on a huge ship, and helping my new friends to kill the pirates (my staff came in handy there, although the group seemed a bit disappointed that I didn't use any magic) ...... exploring new and exciting lands (my Detect Magic spell really helped when we discovered a strange knife sticking out of the trunk of a tree and I could tell them it was held there by magic)........... meeting new people (I explained to the group that the stranger's magic was far stronger than mine, probably because she'd been taught by a proper wizard. Still, they managed to get rid of her without too much trouble) ........ and finding treasure (they never really explained why we didn't get the treasure, or how I got wounded - just something about a magical trap).
I'll admit I was beginning to think that, exciting though this was, we didn't seem to be getting very rich when, in a room, I discovered REAL treasure. A spellbook, just lying on a table, with no hint of a magic user in sight. I remember going across to it …….
It seems the group carried my lifeless body around for some time until they found someone with the power to resurrect me. We're back at the farm now, and they seem to think I'll be mucking out for some time to pay off my debt to them. I'd ask what debt, but as they're all in a bad mood, I'll leave it for now.
