Adventurers - Some words to the wise!
Adventurers ! We’re a funny old breed who tend to work outside of the boundaries of normal, every-day life.
Mistrusted and misunderstood by everyone we meet, but can you say that you are really surprised ? We integrate into normal life like a flame integrates into a barrel of oil !!
Watch now as a roving band of adventurers approaches a new town. We’re not too difficult to spot are we ? Upon arrival at the city gate, fresh from our most recent victory, we either attempt to bribe the local guard with more cash than he could imagine in two lifetimes, or, alternatively, we leave him lying in a pool of his own blood, robbed of the only copper piece he had to his name. (I mean….who did he think he was, asking US to state our business?!)
Here we come, walking cautiously down the main street, single file, fighters to the front, clerics to the rear, and the weedy mages and cut throats in the middle. Marching with purpose towards the nearest tavern. Sound familiar ?
And what an entrance we make upon arrival. Speaking as a tavern owner (Dragonslayer’s Inn – Sanctuary) I’ve seen it all before. The tavern door is thrown wide open to reveal, two fighters, a cleric, a mage, and a shifty looking individual who is desperately seeking a shadow. They all march, with swagger, towards the bar, all the while checking for secret passages and noting the various exits (they can’t help themselves). Once at the bar, they demand, with authority, to speak with the owner. One, usually the leader, tries to enter into some meaningful dialog which is designed to put the owner at ease and to encourage him to regard the adventurers as "local lads", "salt of the earth", you know the sort of drivel I mean. In actual fact, the "conversation", which starts with "Ho there stout Yeoman, a round of your finest ale and could you tell us the local rumours ?" normally ends up with the Yeoman in question needing to rid the tavern of it’s newly acquired scorch marks and to clean the sooty outlines which vaguely resembled the aforementioned adventurers. And, if I had a gold piece for every tosspot that asked me for the accurate dimensions of the room in order to draw a map…… I’d be one rich dude!!
I know…I was first level once too!!
