Water Work
- Perro de Agua Espanol are happy to search under the water as well as on the surface. Some use their feet and some their mouths to find whatever they are looking for. This is not a pastime that is relished by some other breed owners when our dogs stir up the muddy, smelly black silt at the bottom.
- This breed also has the names "Turco", "Turk" and "Turkish Andalusian" and water dog. They were found performing their traditional use in fishing where they dive under the water to retrieve fish from the outside of the nets. There is also reference to its use for helping to moor the boats in the port. Mooring cables were thrown into the water and retrieved by the dog who then swam to shore with the cable in its mouth.
- Being a very busy lot, it took a lot of patience to take this photo. All these dogs are always keen to jump out of the boat to retrieve something.
- Their webbed feet and muscularity make them powerful swimmers but, being light (25 to 45 lbs), care must be taken in fast flowing rivers. They excel in still water and will retrieve until they can't swim any more, if you let them
- Immediately on release from quarantine Lola showed the Northern Newfoundland Canis Major training group that anything a newf could do so could she. One stalwart newf owner was heard to cry "does anyone want three newfs as I want one of these Spanish".
- Their strength for their size (15 to 19.5 inches) is remarkable.
- Rayo looking for something underwater.
- Dilita keeping a matronly eye on the youngsters.
- Relampago going to shore.
- Azor showing how he loves jumping out of boats.
- He will also dive under an upturned boat to retrieve an oar or anything else that happens to be there. We do not have pictures of this but there is a video.(sorry not able to play here)
- When the weather is too cold we take our dogs to a swimming pool. Here Azor is waiting for something to fetch.
