McCool (pilot), and Ilan Ramon (mission specialist).  Lost during re-entry, February, 2003.

Crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger.  Mission commander Francis R. Scobee; pilot Michael J. Smith; mission specialists Ronald E. McNair, Ellison S. Onizuka, and Judith A. Resnik; and payload specialists Gregory B. Jarvis and teacher Christa McAuliffe.  Lost during take-off, January, 1986.

Crew of Salyut-1.  Georgi Dobrovolski, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev.  Lost during re-entry, June 1971.

Crew of Soyuz 1. 
Vladimir Komarov.  Lost on landing, April, 1967. 

Crew of Apollo 1. 
Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee.  Lost during pre-flight practice count-down, January 1967.


In all, at least 21 individuals have lost their life in the space program.  Our heart and prayers go out to the families of these brave pioneers!
