Thanks to the research, writing and drawing of 7th and 8th graders at Graham and Parks, Cambridge Street Trees has been printed by the Cambridge Tree Project, with partial funding by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management and the USDA Forest Service. Please include it in your library. We are offering it to school libraries and public libraries in Cambridge to help people identify trees in Cambridge. We are giving extra copies to each elementary principal to use in their school.

We would like to invite classes or groups from your school and neighborhood to identify significant trees in your area to include in future printings of Cambridge Street Trees. There are street tree lists available for different areas in Cambridge, which can be used as a basis for checking on the trees. We would also like to offer you acknowledgement for any errors or typos you find in the book and also on the street tree list. We are interested in all significant trees whether on private or public property.

Summerbridge students from all over Cambridge in the Environmental Awareness Team have studied trees this year. Last summer they worked with Jean Rogers, the Ranger at Fresh Pond, to mulch and care for the trees there. This fall they have been working with Chris Dewart of the Cambridge Tree Project to identify and label trees around the High School and the Main Branch of the Public Library.

Summerbridge students would like to work with elementary students to prepare for Arbor Day, tree plantings and tree maintenance programs all over Cambridge this spring. “Tree Educational Materials” are available for teachers. You may borrow the materials from the Teacher Resource Center. If you are not located in a school and wish to borrow the materials to work with Cambridge people of any age, call Karen Carmean at 547-1413 to arrange to borrow the materials.

If you would like to work with Summerbridge 8th & 9th grade students who have been studying trees and preparing to teach what they have learned to others, contact Karen Carmean and Joel Pollack at 547-1413 or better yet, send email to DoanePerry@compuserve.com. The “Tree Educational Materials” list is attached.
